53-man roster projection

10:57 PM Sun, Aug 24, 2008 | Permalink | Yahoo! Buzz
Tim MacMahon

This is no longer premature. The cuts are coming soon, and it's not out of the realm of possibility that the Cowboys' 53-man roster will include one or two players who went to training camp with other teams.
Follow the jump for an educated guess about the 53 guys the Cowboys will keep.

QB
Tony Romo
Brad Johnson
Comment: Cowboys could add a third QB, depending on who is available, but they're comfortable with Johnson as Romo's backup.

RB
Marion Barber
Felix Jones
Tashard Choice
Comment: Only question with this group is whether Felix Jones should return kicks.

FB
Deon "Cricket" Anderson
Comment: He's a valuable special teamer, solid lead blocker and can do a little somethin' when he gets the ball on checkdowns.

TE
Jason Witten
Tony Curtis
Martellus Bennett
Comment: Bennett, a phenomenal athlete in a 6-6, 260-pound package, flashed his potential on a 29-yard catch and run against the Texans.

WR
Terrell Owens
Patrick Crayton
Sam Hurd
Miles Austin
Isaiah Stanback
Danny Amendola
Comment: This is the toughest position to figure, primarily because of injuries. Austin should be back some time in September, and he'll slide right into the No. 4 role. Stanback might require shoulder surgery, which would mean he'd land on injured reserve. The Cowboys probably won't sign a veteran like Terry Glenn or Joe Horn, but count on them keeping a close eye on the waiver wire. Mike Jefferson and Amendola might be competing for the final roster spot in the preseason finale.

OL
LT Flozell Adams
LG Kyle Kosier
C Andre Gurode
RG Leonard "Bigg" Davis
RT Marc Colombo
T/G Pat McQuistan
T/G Doug Free
G/C Cory Procter
G Joe Berger
G/T James Marten
Comment: Kosier's foot injury eliminated any doubt about the Cowboys keeping 10 linemen.

DL
Chris Canty
Jay Ratliff
Marcus Spears
Tank Johnson
Jason Hatcher
Stephen Bowen
Comment: Spears won't give up his starting job without a fight.

ILB
Bradie James
Zach Thomas
Kevin Burnett
Bobby Carpenter
Comment: The Cowboys need Burnett and Carpenter to be standouts on punt and kick coverage.

OLB
DeMarcus Ware
Greg Ellis
Anthony Spencer
Justin Rogers
Erik Walden
Comment: Spencer's knee surgery might have guaranteed Walden, a sixth-rounder who should contribute on special teams, a roster spot.

CB
Terence Newman
Anthony Henry
Adam "Pacman" Jones
Mike Jenkins
Orlando Scandrick
Evan Oglesby
Comment: Oglesby hasn't built on his training camp momentum in the last two games. But Alan Ball was even worse against Denver and Houston. If the Cowboys decide to add a QB, they could go with only five cornerbacks.

S
Ken Hamlin
Roy Williams
Pat Watkins
Courtney Brown
Comment: They'll probably try to stash Dowayne Davis on the practice squad.

SPEC.
P Mat McBriar
K Nick Folk
LS L.P. Ladouceur
Comment: Folk needs to either get hang time consistently on kickoffs or brush up on his tackling technique.

Through long and exhausting investigative work, I have finally come to the conclusion that Tim MacMahon is, in fact, NOT Nors in real life.

That is all.

I would rather have Dowayne Davis than Walden on ST.

Jerry needs to replace a couple OL via the waiver wire, especially: Proctor & Marten. I hope Dallas can also find a better backup OLB than Rogers, who has been supremely unimpressive in preseason.

I also think that Hannah has more upside than TD Tony Curtis. Curtis has been showcased enough that he could probably be traded.

would yall rather have Amendola than Jefferson on the roster? Personally, I think Jefferson is better now and has better upside.

maybe they will put Stanback on the DL if he gets surgery, and Dallas can keep both Jefferson and Amendola.

With the history of injuries to T-New and Ant I'd be very surprised if we only kept 5 CB's.

Maybe we get a draft pick for Curtus and keep Hannah on the team?

that looks pretty good based on our current roster and injury situations

very good chance that 1-3 of those 53 roster spots go to players not here right now

Care to guess a position?

Unfortunately I'd have to guess QB. I hate the idea of 3 QBs but if Beck or Simms becomes available I think the team would bite.

WR would be my other guess. Hopefully Stanglass isn't out for too long. Not that I was expecting much from him but it would suck to lose him for this year from the prospective that he would miss out on a lot of much needed experience.

I'd say QB, interior OL and WR...maybe one of them...maybe two, maybe all three...

QB may have become less of a liklihood RIGHT NOW because of the injuries elsewhere, but once everyone is healthy, the bottom of the roster guy might be dumped for a backup QB if one they like is still sitting out there

Can't argue with any of that.

Also, Jefferson and Amendola both have a HUGE chance to make the team this week. If one of them puts up some big numbers, it may be enough to make the roster with the injuries we currently have at WR.

Jefferson clearly is better than Amendola as a receiver. Problem is, he for some reason cant catch perfectly thrown balls while hes open, but he can grab balls in traffic and tight space.

What a dilemma.

ha good point

Jefferson is better on special teams though also imo, at least on kick coverage units.

Amendola is a better returner, but I dont think he is the answer at returner either.

Definitely agree.

I think one to three players on the opening day roster aren't here yet.

I think Kosier's injury will have a significant impact on the team's next move.

And Stanback's as well depending on what treatment route they choose.

I've read that he has the potential to spend the season on IR.

And I expect the team to acquire a young QB for Garrett to start grooming as the next backup.
