The early stages of the talks between the Cowboys and Pat Dye regarding DeMarcus Ware centered around "quarterback money."
Once Dye realized the Cowboys were not going to pay Ware quarterback money after seeing what Eli Manning and Phillip Rivers received, the talks heated up and eventually ended with a $13 million average.
Forget Albert Haynesworth's seven-year, $100 million deal in Washington. Boil that down and it's a four-year, $48 million contract at $12 mil a year.
When asked if he should have received QB money for tackling QBs, Ware had the best answer I have ever heard him give since 2005. He showed he gets it.
"I feel I've gotten what I deserve in my situation because you can't ask for too much money when you need other players in here and you know you've got to be able to build," Ware said. "You can't build with one guy. It's all about the team."
Could he have received more? Maybe. Could that have hurt the Cowboys in other spots? Absolutely. It reminded me of Tom Brady taking a lesser deal - and who are we kidding when we say "lesser" when it involves so many millions - from New England because it would help the team get more players.
Ware showed with his words and actions, to me, that he wasn't about getting every last penny.
