Maybe Jason Garrett just wanted to spice up the afternoon practice with all the big-money sponsors watching again. Or maybe the Cowboys plan on using Patrick Crayton's cannon of an arm at some point.

The starting offense ran a reverse pass, with Crayton lining up on the left and taking a handoff from the back before setting up to throw a bit to the right of where the pocket would be. Sam Hurd got behind the secondary on a post route, but Crayton overthrew him by about a yard.

I couldn't see the exact yard line from my vantage point behind the end zone, but I'd estimate that Crayton's pass sailed 65 yards. I've seen the former college QB heave the rock 70 yards several times.

Crayton has only attempted one pass in his NFL career, a pick his rookie year. I've got a feeling he'll get another chance this season.

sounds like garrett is dipping into the 90's playbook again. i remember this play being run with harper taking the reverse and then throwing deep to irvin... seems like we ran it succesfully several times.

I keep saying, I wish Crayton were the holder on PATs and FGs. It would add another dimension to that aspect. Not only can he throw, he can run.

Really? The stats show that Harper had 1 attempt, 1 completion, 46 yards and 0 TDs and I am struggling to remember that single play. The 90s teams didn't really run very many trick plays on offense. Seems like the trickery was saved for special teams.

I remember Landry's teams ran those plays several times. Drew Pearson had a very good arm. Maybe the 88 and 80 you remember seeing several times was Pearson to Hill and not Harper to Irvin.

There has been talk about using Crayton in this manner since he joined the team. And with Parcells penchant for running trick plays I am surprised that it was only attempted once.

He went to school here in Oklahoma, where I live. He gets beat up enough, no need to add fuel to the fire. Ya heard?

The timing between the long snapper, holder and kicker is intricate. It takes a lot of practice and repetitions. A backup QB or punter are typically the holders because they have the most free time on their hands during practice to work on it while everyone else is doing team drills.
