Are Rice's records within T.O.'s reach?

Happy birthday to the Original 81!! T.O. turns 34 today.

Albert "Einstein" Breer put into statistical perspective just how remarkable a season T.O. is having for a receiver his age. Simply put, he's the best 34-year-old receiver in the history of the game.

"He's still running like he’s a young guy," Tony Romo said. "His explosiveness has been a huge help to our team obviously this year. He maintains his body like not a lot of people do. He's one of those guys who could play receiver at the highest level maybe until he's 38 or 39."

Let's assume that Romo is right about T.O. having five prime seasons left. If that's the case, T.O. will have a shot at breaking ex-49ers teammate Jerry Rice's records, considered unbreakable by many.

Catches are swell and all, but the receiving records that really matter are yards and touchdowns. Rice finished with 22,895 yards and 197 TD catches.

T.O. has 12,964 yards and 128 TD catches in his career, so he needs 9,931 yards and 69 TDs to break Rice's records. Can he do it?

"I'm not sure," T.O. said. "I don't even know how many years I'd have to play to get that many. I'm just going out there and playing. Whatever happens, happens."

T.O. plays it down, but you know he'd love to retire with the statistical title of the Greatest Receiver of All-Time. He said he feels like he could play another 10 years, although the fitness freak knows that's probably not feasible.

Rice, who retired at the ripe old age of 42, had 6,518 yards and 43 TDs in season after he turned 34. T.O. might be a long shot to break Rice's career records, but it's a solid bet that he'll put up better numbers as an old man.

Assuming TO keeps up his pace this season, and plays until he's 42, he'd have to average 1186.9 yards per season and 8 TDs per season.

I could definitely see him breaking the TD record, but it's doubtful he breaks the yardage record.

I'm one of the few that despised Jerry Rice, I would be happy to see TO top him.

Not gonna happen. He is going to put up good numbers in the next few years, but he really didn't have any other receiver taking many touches away from him. Bring in a solid #2 or draft a guy (I consider Crayton a 3rd) and it'll be hard for him to put these kind of numbers up again. Plus, I don't think he will want to play as long as Rice did and basically be forced out of the game due to slowing down. I think he will quit when he either thinks we have no shot to get a ring or he thinks he has the numbers to be a lock at the hall of fame.

I think even at age 34 he is physically up to the challenge but if we add another stud WR.....how will this affect the number of attempts going his way?

I think he'll break the TD record and get pretty close to the yards....maybe 200+ TD's and 21,000 yards.

He led the league in TDs last year, with Terry Glenn having one of his best years ever.

Obviously there aren't going to be too many 20 TD season left in him, but he doesn't have to get that many to overtake Jerry.

If Garrett sticks around and Romo stays healthy, I could see TO getting 12 TDs per season for the next 3 years.

I don't think TO has enough of years left in his body to break any of the Rice's record. He is nearly 10,000 yards and 70 TDs behind, it's going to take at least 6 very good years for him to come close to it and I don't see him having 6 consecutive good years, perhaps 4 or 5 at best.

If he does pass Rice, he will have earned the right to be called the greatest ever. That would be a huge accomplishment. We will all have front row seats for it. Bring your popcorn.

:D Dunno he would also need to win as many superbowls as Rice had to be the greatest ever. But to be honest, I rather have a young #1 playing for the cowboys after TO's numbers go down.

I still think Cris Carter is the best WR ever.

Don Hutson is the greatest of all time... he did things no one else did when they could kill the WR...check out his stats and the period of time he played in.... amazing...

it really doesn't look like he'll reach that yardage mark.

I dont think he will make the TD mark.... he needs 69.... even if he played 4 more years at 15 TD's per.. that only 60... plus the the remaining TD's from this year...

If it plays out like above scenario.... maybe he comes back for a 5th... but thats a high level of play to play at from age 35 to 39....

I think Emmitt's rushing record is much more vulnerable than Rice's, sad to say. Receivers are playing better, longer, but just look to Marvin Harrison to see how quickly things can change.

Of Rice's records for catches, yards, and touchdowns, I'd have to agree that TDs are the most possible to reach, but T.O. needs 70 to break that one.
