Bradie James wants to help Jason Williams

Linebackers coach Reggie Herring has a heck of a project on his hands with third-round pick Jason Williams, a workout warrior struggling with the mental adjustment required to leap from Western Illinois to the NFL.

"So what he can run a 4.49?" Bradie James said, referring to Williams' 40 time. "If he doesn't know what he's doing, he'll run a 5.5."

James is more than willing to Williams get up to speed, as long as the rookie is willing to work.

"Jason Williams comes out here every day and wants to work," James said. "It makes it a little easier for me to talk to him. I definitely talk to him, but there's so much.

"You can talk to him all day long. There are so many nuances you have to learn at inside linebacker, so he can be just reacting out there and not thinking. When there's something that he wants to know, I'm right there."

Williams is likely to start next to James at some point in the not-too-distant future. But that seems a long way away right now.

Well Carpenter is playing Nickel then. I'm kinda excited to see how he does. He'll finally get a chance. He played like a probowler in that Seattle playoff game. He was all over the place. Get the mans confidence up!!

James: Rookies Deepen LB Corps
Posted by rphillips at 8/5/2009 12:17 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com

Linebacker depth has been labeled a question mark by many because the Cowboys have four draft picks -- Jason Williams, Victor Butler, Brandon Williams and Stephen Hodge -- all playing new positions.

Inside linebacker Bradie James disagrees with those concerns.

"I think this is the deepest we've ever been since Wade's been here, actually," James said. "Those guys, even though they're young, they're hungry. They make mistakes, but they make mistakes full-speed and you can build on those types of guys."

Interesting comment by James, a defensive captain who typically doesn't pull any punches in interviews. He's already said Jason Williams, a fellow inside 'backer, needs to keep watching film and learn from his mistakes so he can play the position more naturally.

But James also said the rookies could make the defense more athletic, and they've all shown a strong work ethic. That's all you can ask this early into training camp.

Butler and Brandon Williams, 4-3 defensive ends in college, look like the primary backups to DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer at outside linebacker. The Cowboys waived veteran OLB Greg Ellis and lost nickel linebacker Kevin Burnett to free agency. Bobby Carpenter and veteran Keith Brooking probably will help fill that role.

Bradie James lets performance show the way

Linebacker Bradie James had an incredible year last year, posting a career high 202 tackles. He's only the second Dallas defender to top 200 in one season, second only to Eugene Lockhart who had 222 in 1989.

And like last year when he was a team captain, more is expected from a leadership role this year. "I always talk about guys accepting their roles," he says. "What I know is, I have to go out there and perform real well because if I'm not performing well, guys won't listen to me. It's about doing and coming out here and being consistent on a daily basis. The leadership is pretty much natural to us."

James enters his 5th season as the starting strongside inside linebacker in the 3-4 scheme and has lead the Cowboys in tackles for the past four years. His leadership is key in helping the younger players fit it. "They don't do everything exactly right all the time, but they're trying," he says. "And if you have guys that are always trying, you can work with them. If they are lazy, you don't want to deal with them and we don't have those guys."

James says he likes what Head Coach Wade Phillips is doing with the defense this year. "Wade is aggressive by nature and so this scheme will be aggressive," James says. "We are going to live and die by going full speed. And I like that."

Since he took over as a starter, James has averaged 143 tackles per season.
