Just got back from the beautiful Cowboys Golf Club out in Grapevine for the club's annual golf outing, and we'll be passing along information from there over the next couple hours.
Let's start, again, with Roy Williams, who had a meeting last week with defensive coordinator Brian Stewart and safeties coach Brett Maxie. Owner Jerry Jones, who signs those hefty checks that Roy is cashing, said today he's not lost faith in his big-money Pro Bowler.
"I have, candidly, a lot of confidence in Roy Williams' competitiveness, his record as an outstanding football player," Jones said. "I know what a competitor he is, I know what a team player he is and that hasn't changed as far as I'm concerned. And for us to be the team we want to be, in my mind, we need Roy to really be the player he can be. That's possible to do here. We've got outstanding coaching in our secondary, with Dave Campo and (Brett) Maxie, as well as Brian Stewart.
"And so I don't know of a secondary player in the NFL that has a better opportunity than our secondary players do because of our coaching staff and the experience they've had there. When I look at it, I see the chance for Roy Williams really to have a fine year for us and do what he wants to do individually. I have a lot of faith in Roy Williams."
One interesting note -- The team was holding some sort of contest/auction for signed jersey. And for the first time, at least to these eyes, Roy's No. 38 was on display. And he signed it with "38" under his name. We'll see if this really is a new beginning, or if the Cowboys are going to get the same Roy.
