Report: Shockey wants out

Albert Breer

Just hours after Drew Rosenhaus climbed to the mountaintop and declared that all talks involving rockstar tight end Jeremy Shockey will remain "between Jeremy and the New York Giants", the Star-Ledger brought us this ...
Shockey told the Giants in December he wanted a changed role in the offense or a trade to another team, according to a person familiar with discussions between Shockey, the Giants' coaching staff and front office. The person, who requested anonymity because he isn't authorized to speak on behalf of Shockey or the Giants, said Shockey threatened to sit out the upcoming season if neither request was granted.

Shockey, 27, who suffered a broken fibula in a Dec. 16 loss to the Commanders, feels his career is being cut short by all the blocking he has been asked to do since Tom Coughlin became coach of the Giants in 2004. While blocking is an integral part of a tight end's job description, Shockey believes he was more effective as a receiver under former coach Jim Fassel and offensive coordinator Sean Payton, now the coach of the New Orleans Saints, who are interested in trading for Shockey.
Asking a tight end to block? What were the Giants thinking?!?!?

He will be a New Orleans Saint in a few days in one of those "draft day trades" we hear about. What will be interesting to see is how much blocking he is asked to do with the Saints.

In the meantime, somewhere Roy Williams is dancing a jig. A quick glance at the schedule shows we don't play the Saints this year. :D

And the cycle is almost complete.

The Giants are almost minus one more loser/sometime productive cancer.

And we want to bring in more loser's to our team.
Times are changing... teams are dumping the "problem" players.

Here is to hoping we just draft and draft well.

I'm hearing Saints' S Roman Harper would likely be part of the deal. If this is the case, this is BAD news for the rest of the NFCE. Harper is your typical Jim Johnson/Steve Spagnuola secondary/safety player.

His production has gone down over the last couple of years and he sees Witten playing TE and being ALL Pro and catching 100 passes a year now.

And Witten does run block, but he's not there to be a run blocker.

I'm happy if he gets his wish to go to NO.

Problem is, I'm not going to be happy seeing the Jints get another #1 pick for him if that is the case.

Especially if it's NO's number 1 this year.

We'll see.

Let's see.

Coughlin asked Shockey to block. It didn't produce a championship.

Coughlin asked Kevin Boss to block. It did produce a championship.

Okay, can someone tell me what kind of argument Shockey's trying to stand behind here???

I could see Seattle trying to get into this deal and getting him. One of the pieces they've missed for a long time is a productive, pass catching, tight end for their passing game and Shockey could easily provide that. He'd be a super upgrade over any TE the Seahawks have had at any time during the last five years.

Since I don't think anyone is giving up a first rounder for a TE, the Seahawks could make a run at him.

Well, if Seattle had Shockey instead of the other Jerremy a couple of seasons ago, they would've had a better shot of winning the Super Bowl. Then again, I'm not sure how any team could've overcome the refs' officiating during that game.

Dallas East..but a good stab at an answer none the less. The issue with Shockey probably has more to do with Boss playing well enough for the Giants to consider not needing him.

But I really don't think you dump Shockey because he was injured and somebody filled it as they were expected to anyway.

It's like asking Fasano to step in and play in place of Witten. Since we've never had to really do it..we really don't know if Fasano could be effective or not.

Probably could be..but even if he is, I don't think you trade Witten.

The Jints will work this out.

Surely they are not so stupid as to trade away an All Pro TE in Shockey when they are going to need every weapon they can muster next year to defend their World Championship.

The Jints are not dominating. They can't afford to dump talent. They will be in trouble.

Just as we'd be if we dumped Witten in similar circumstances.

This will blow over.

And frankly, I want Shockey to stay with the Jints. The Cowboys need to play their best and beat the best if this team is ever going to succeed.

I want the Jints to have everybody happy and playing for them so when we play them, we beat them heads-up with no excuses that they were playing with a new DC and they weren't ready or that somebody like Shockey was injured and therefore that becomes an excuse., etc.

And besides, RW needs to learn how to cover TEs if we are ever going to get to any playoff game and win it.

So please, Shockey..stay in NY. We need you.

If anything-Shockey was responsible for about 1/2 of Eli's picks. There were times when Eli read the blitz correctly, but Shockey would end up running a completely bad route. Why he always did this? Is he that bone-stupid when it comes to understanding the playbook? Is he too complacent to study in the game film room? Is missing offseason workouts + mini camp making him bet behind?
