First, I'd like to thank Tim for the gracious welcome to the ol' Cowboys blog. You won't get much Patriots talk out of me. If memory serves, my first Cowboys game was a preseason scrum against the Packers in 1984. That has to be right, because the next season was `85 when the Bears administered the 44-0 spanking. I just remember thinking, "Holy you-know-what! The Cowboys lost 44-0 at home?!"
I need to pull Jacques aside and ask him a question I've been wondering for years: Which practice field is the "asthma" field anyway? There's only one man who knows for sure.
Granted, we're about to hit July but I've got a lot of other questions about the Cowboys. I may not have all the answers, but here's a promise. By the end of training camp, I will have made many trips to In-N-Out Burger all while steering clear of the Hard Knocks cameras.
Here are some topics that are kicking around in my head.
1. Sam Hurd and Miles Austin got a lot of attention during the OTAs since T.O. and Terry Glenn were absent. But there's a perception that neither player is ready for anything more than a secondary role. Hurd had 19 receptions last year; Austin had five. There's all this talk about Terry Glenn and whether the Cowboys are (not really) interested in Joe Horn. Let's say Glenn doesn't agree to the split salary. Shouldn't Hurd and Austin get a chance to show what they've got in Oxnard before automatically being dismissed as not-ready-for-prime-time players?
2. All the hoopla surrounding Adam Jones' arrival is certainly warranted. If Jones remains a model citizen and returns to his 2006 form, the Cowboys will benefit big time. But what about Mike Jenkins? Um, didn't the Cowboys use a first-round pick on him? He may be the most invisible first-round draft pick we've seen in a NFL training camp. Think about it. What has really been written or said about Jenkins thus far? What if the Cowboys could line up Jenkins and Jones on the corners, put Terence Newman on a receiver in the slot and let Ken Hamlin and Anthony Henry roam around at safety. Sounds like a solid nickel package to me.
3. For some reason, I believe Tashard Choice will surprise a lot of people. I spent three seasons covering Oklahoma (2004-06), and Choice was considered a solid running back by Bob Stoops and Co. during his stay in Norman. The only problem was that OU had this guy named Adrian Peterson. Choice saw the writing on the wall and bolted for Georgia Tech. Excellent decision. He led the ACC in rushing in 2006. Now, we've got to keep an eye on his right knee, which got banged up last season. Choice is a relatively quiet guy but definitely one to watch.
