Bring it home
Right now, it looks as if the Cowboys and Packers, regardless of who wins on Sunday, will be the top two seeds in the NFC. Put it this way, the loser will carry, at the very least, a two-game lead over the leaders of the South and West out of Week 13, with four games to go.
And while that's no guarantee the two will meet again on Jan. 20 with a trip to Glendale on the line -- Injuries happen, as do divisional-round upsets -- it'd be a good bet to say if they do, it will probably be in the Nov. 29 winner's house. We're not breaking news here, but if you look at the two teams remaining schedules, it makes coming back for the loser of Thursday's game that much tougher. Here's what's left for these two:
COWBOYS
Dec. 9 at Detroit (6-5)
Dec. 16 vs. Philadelphia (5-5)
Dec. 22 at Carolina (4-6)
Dec. 30 at Washington (5-5)
PACKERS
Dec. 9 vs. Oakland (2-8)
Dec. 16 at St. Louis (2-8)
Dec. 23 at Chicago (4-6)
Dec. 30 vs. Detroit (6-5)
The situation, in fact, would decidedly more dire for the Cowboys in the case of a loss. The Packers play Oakland, which should have JaMarcus Russell making his second start that week, and St. Louis, which will be playing out the string, before facing two division opponents. While it's easy to see the Packers dropping one of their final two, it's hard to see them losing twice.
If the Cowboys can through a tricky one against Detroit, they should be set up to finish at least 3-1 in the final four. And thus, shut the Packers out of the top seed, if they win Thursday.
Then, there's the other part of this, which is that even if the victor goes 2-2, the winner will have to be 4-0 to make it matter.
So it looks like both teams feel like they better win this one, the Packers perhaps because of their terrible recent luck in Irving (Favre's 0-8 there) and the Cowboys because going to Lambeau in the playoffs is almost always a losing proposition for the visiting team.
