Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips
Wade Phillips wasn't particularly fond of his first Cowboys' training camp getting nicknamed Camp Cupcake, so he kidded as a preemptive strike that this one would be Camp Marshmallow.
Nevertheless, the coach briefly known as Mr. Fix-It wasn't real thrilled that the first episode of Hard Knocks emphasized that the Cowboys don't tackle during training camp. Phillips stressed the next day that his training camp is physical despite the no-tackling policy.
Well, the Cowboys missed a whole bunch of tackles while getting their butts kicked by the Chargers in the preseason opener. It'd be real easy to fire off a knee-jerk rant about how Wade's way too soft on his team during training camp.
But it'd also be wrong.
Phillips' job is to prepare this team to win in the regular season and playoffs, not the preseason. A major part of that is leaving California with as clean a bill of health as possible.
Plus, the first week plus of training camp was physical, up until the defense got into position to make a tackle. Last week was light, but the Cowboys will butt heads with the Broncos for four practices and a preseason game next week.
Oh, and there's the fact that the Cowboys' frontline players were plenty ready for full contact. You want proof? The Cowboys gained 46 yards on seven carries behind their starting OL last night. The Chargers gained 6 yards on three carries against the Cowboys' starting defense.
