Campo on the young corners

Calvin Watkins

We caught up with secondary coach Dave Campo and asked him to asset some of the young cornerbacks.

On Alan Ball: "Long, fast." Ball is still getting work on the second team, though his ankle sprain might slow his progress.

On Mike Jenkins: "Athletic, learning the game, instinctive."

Does he need work on the jam? "Yeah, footwork is not great but he's coming along. Good quickness. He's a young player."

Jenkins is working with the first team with Terence Newman out.
On Orlando Scandrick: "Smart guy. Great burst and speed. Can play outside on the nickel."

Scandrick has improved the last two days of practice.

Alan Ball might not long for this team.

TNew
Henry
Jones (assuming reinstatment)
Jenkins
Scandrink

All locks. Do we keep 6? I would.

I think we keep 6. Jenkins looks like everything we thought he was. and Scandrink was one of the steals of the draft. i think we keep Alan Ball too.

I think those six are a lock. Jerry has talked that they might go 7 (oglesby) for a total of 11 DBs, but that would prevent them from keeping 6 WRs. I would prefer to go six deep at both positions.

I think we keep Ball, Tnew and Henry are injury risks at this point

7 CBs, 3 safeties, I think Watkins may be the odd man out if it's anybody

6 is a lock -- esp with Henry playing some at S. 10 DBs. Add in Roy, Hamlin, Brown, and Watkins.

The only "battle" is whether oglesby can beat out Ball.

Heard talk of Watkins as taking Davis' role on ST (i.e., a big role)

I'd like to see Anderson take on that role. That crazy SOB would be awesome at it. :laugh2:

Watkins is a key special teams player - he is not going anywhere. Ball would be gone before him.

I think it depends if that 6th guy can contribute on special teams. That tends to be the case for many guys who are on the bubble.

See......if the NFL would get their act together and change the roster size from 53 to 60 and simply allow 50 to dress every week, we could keep 6 CBs.

In fact, if the roster size were 60:

QB - 3 Romo, Johnson + 1 more
RB - 4 MB3, Felix, Choice, Lattimore/Coleman
FB -1 Cricket
WR - 6 TO, Crayton, Hurd, Austin, Stanback, Amendola
TE - 4 Witten, Curtis, Bennett, Hannah
OL - 10 Adams, Kosier, Gurode, Davis, Colombo + 5 more

DE - 5 Canty, Ratliff, Bowen, Hatcher, Dixon/Smith
DT - 3 Tank, Spears, Saivii
OLB - 5 DWare, Ellis, Spencer, Walden, Robertson
ILB - 5 James, Thomas, Burnett, Carpenter, Rogers
CB - 6 Terry, Tony, Adam, Mike, Orlando, Alan
S - 5 - Roy, Ken, Pat, Courtney, Dowayne

K - 1 - Folk
P - 1 - McBriar
LS - 1 - LPL

Instead, every team has to struggle to fit the roster into 53 slots.....and then injuries hit and they get screwed cause of their depth.

TC start = 90 players
TC ends = 80 players
after 3rd/4th preseason game = 70 players
after Final preseason game = 60 players

Roster = 60
Active = 50
Inactive = 10
Practice Squad = 5

This would work for every team, IMO. It would also help teams keep players that are marginal, that they are interested in, but simply can't squeeze them onto the roster. So instead of putting them on the PS, and watching them get plucked by another team, the player makes the team and is allowed to develop.

We do have a roster size of 60 -- it is just that 7 of those guys a) can't play in games and b) can take a job with another team if they have a better opportunity.

All a bigger roster would do is limit the movement of players and more stupidly, create more specialists. You'd see tons of teams with multiple kickers. Yes, let's have an expanded roster so that a guy who specializes in onside kicks can be active. Yes, let's hold on to a 4th RB who won't play for us at all when he might be able to actually get a shot somewhere else (see Ryan Grant).

Can someone provide the formal explanation behind having inactives on gameday? Why not have the players you are paying full salaries to be able to participate each week?

It is likely so that a team who has injured guys who can't play isn't getting the crap beat out of them by a team that has a full roster of healthy guys. It gives a team a place to put injured players without losing them for the season.
