Picked up pieces from the first day of Pro Bowl practice:
** Chad Ochocinco showed in the preseason he could kick, booting a PAT and kicking off for the Bengals. He did a decent job of punting in the AFC workout Wednesday, giving Shane Lechler a rest.
** All three NFC defensive linemen that were on hand for Wednesday's practice wear No. 90 - the Cowboys' Jay Ratliff, Arizona's Darnell Dockett and Carolina's Julius Peppers.
** While Ochocinco showed his chops as a punter, Philadelphia safety Quintin Mikell is not ready to take over for David Akers as a kicker. He dribbled one off the tee during a break in practice.
** How popular is Miles Austin? After practice he answered the call of some students asking for an autograph and was quickly surrounded by another 20 or 30 before leaving the field.
** Akers played catch with some of the students in the stands, proving that it's not all business at the Pro Bowl.
** After dropping an interception on a screen pass, Ratliff had to hear it from McNabb. "And you were a tight end?" McNabb said, which shows McNabb does homework on guys if he knew Ratliff played some tight end at Auburn.
** On Tuesday night Eagles long snapper Jon Dorenbos put together a string of card tricks that left a Cowboys contingent that included DeMarcus Ware and Jason Witten awestruck. He has performed in Vegas in the past. He was mesmerizing.
** Tony Romo wasn't the only player missing from the NFC workout. Philadelphia's Trent Cole was also not in attendance.

Around Cowboys land, Wade Phillips is known for being Mr. Nice Guy with easy training camps and practices, although I think that really has never been completely accurate.
But some NFC players were caught by surprise at Phillips' first practice at the Pro Bowl Wednesday at St. Thomas Aquinas High School. Normally the "practices" last a little more than an hour with the players doing little more than stretching their legs.
Not today. They all stars went through an up-tempo practice that looked a lot like a regular-season workout. At the end of the session Philadelphia cornerback Asante Samuel jokingly screamed out, "NFLPA, we need some minimums for these practices," referring to the players association that monitors off-season workouts.
"Other guys were saying, 'You need to step in and do something,'" tight end Jason Witten said. "It's hard when it's your head coach and you have to deal with him. In my six years [in the Pro Bowl] that was the most intense schedule I've been a part of. Like Wade's said, it's a football game and we're going to try to go in it. As great a guy as he is and a player's coach, that's the way he goes about it."
Later I found out the players got off easy. The coaches cut the work out seven plays short.
