I just got off the phone with defensive end Chris Canty, who will hit the open market tonight at 11. Canty should be one of the more sought after defensive ends available and he is helped by the fact that more teams are moving to the 3-4.

Canty did not close the door on returning to the Cowboys but he knows it is not likely.

"More than anything the had to do things according to what they felt was in the best interest of the team," Canty said. "I think we both expected to have something done by this point in time but we didn't. It is what it is. It wasn't my intention to not be signed and I know it wasn't their intention. That's just the business."

It is what it is. Canty wants his money.

The facts say however, that Mr. Canty isn't anywhere close to the 40million+ dollar contract he will most likely get.

The Cowboys aren't stupid. Signing him to a contract like that is pure suicide.

Thanks for what you did in Dallas, Mr. Canty. You are solid, just not 40million spectacular.

I'm going to hate to see him leave, but with some many teams switching to the 3-4 this year, he's going to get a very nice contract.

We've already given some players of his caliber similar contracts, why would he think he wouldn't get the same thing?

We have? Who got 40million+

Canty isn't even the same type of player as Ratliff and we got him for 5 years 20.5 million.

Hes a notch above a JAG... solid vs the run but an average pass rusher...

once he signs his big deal elsewhere this off-season he will probably start bouncing around the league in a few years

thanks for all your hard work Chris C... I'm interested to see if Jason Hatcher can secure the starting position and man it.

Im curious to see his answer too.

Maybe he just wants to cry like a baby?

I agree that Canty would have value to 34 defenses.

But when I hear that the Skins are interested in Canty, I don't think he's really going to help their pass rush much at all. I don't think it's a good fit if he goes to a 43 team as much as a 34 team.

So if Canty is gone, does Jason Hatcher become the man? Do we draft a DE with our 2nd round pick, or seek a safety with that second?

I think it's the media thats pumping Canty getting $50 and Hanyesworth getting $15-16M a year.

In todays economy, I'm not sure why someone would pay that. Especially when so many good players are getting cut due to salary. (Dockery, etc)

I think Hatcher gets his shot.

That said, IF we pick up a guy like C Cole in FA or a big NT in the Draft, that also permits Ratliff to play some DE and rotate with Hatcher and Spears.

But any way we cut it, we are going to lose 2 guys on the DL this off-season, Tank and Canty.

I think we may end up picking one DL in FA and then drafting another one.

We draft a NT and move Ratliff to DE. Olshansky>Spears. Ratliff>Canty.

He's better than RW. Not sure what RW's contract would be in today's dollars but I bet it would be at least as much. Ratliff resigned before he had a Pro Bowl breakout year. That's why I said better to sign Ware now before he has another monster year and the price goes up a lot more. What did Colombo get? Bradie James got right at $30M over 5 and that's at MILB. That's equivalent money then for a good contract for a 3-4 DE I think. McBriar got $11M over 5 which made him the highest paid punter in the league at the time.

So you can't just look at how much but what's the market for the player at the time.

Barber got something like 40 for 7 years on his deal so it wouldn't have been unheard of but I'm glad, like Chris or not, that they aren't going to bend and give him that kind of deal.

CNNSI has him listed as the 6th most desirable free agent. One man's trash ...

I'd love to have him back, but not at the money he will command.

This is an interesting point. My first reaction was no way, this ain't baseball. The vast majority of NFL teams spend most of their cap on average.

But on second thought, even if just a few teams drop their payrolls that could have a significant effect on demand.

So it's not that nobody would pay that but rather that the highest bidder might not have to pay that (if they play their cards right.)

Anyway, we're about to find out...

I certainly don't want to give him 40 mil. But I wonder if we couldn't have got him for something significantly less than that had we made an offer earlier. We know his agent rejected the Cowboys' initial offer but we don't know how much it was.

I think Canty's agent wanted T Kelly money right from the beginning.
