Talked to a few coaches here in Mobile, Ala., who said it's a little strange to hire an offensive coordinator before the head coach, though it's not unheard of. Miami hired a defensive coordinator, Dom Capers, before it hired Cam Cameron as the head coach.

Many coaches know each other, it's a small world really, according to some.

If Wade Phillips gets the Cowboys' head coaching job, he wouldn't have a problem working with Jason Garrett, who he considers a great guy.

If Norv Turner got in the mix, he talks to Garrett on a regular basis, so that's not an issue either.

The key is the rest of the staff. If Phillips, the defensive coordinator at San Diego, is hired, some Chargers assistant coaches could come with him. All the assistant coaches, including receivers coach James Lofton, who interviewed with the Raiders recently, and who used to live in Dallas, are in the final year of their contracts.

Well, we already had Wes Chandler as WR coach once. Why not Lofton?

I really wish they would hire Phillips, who would bring over Manusky. To me that staff would be among the better ones in football. If I were Jerry I give Phillips a three year deal at around 3.5mill a season and JG 1.5mill....with the understanding that unless Phillips wins a Super Bowl, Garrett takes over in two years.
Phillips can than go back to being a DC a little richer in the pocket and Jason takes over with a little more seasoning behind him.

This thread is why I haven't been too panicked at hiring an OC before the head coach. In some cases that is probably a terrible move, and I know it could be construed as such here. However, Garrett still needs to prove himself, and he's a guy who is highly respected. For the coaches that Jerry is seriously considering, it's probably not an issue.

Wade Phillips=Yuck. I'd go the Gary Gibbs route.

what is the problem with Phillips??? Trust me when you see that defense of his with the talent he has to work with in Dallas, you won't be saying that very long.

Maybe it'll be Rivera and they just can't say anything right now. Thats what I'm hoping anyway.

If we've hired Garrett we should just make him HC and be done with it. What happens next year if we have a good season and he gets offered a HC position somewhere else?

Do we fire Phillips or Turner after one year in order to keep Garrett. That's what we'll be forced to do if we want to keep him.

The possible problem is that theres a big difference between being a really good DC and a really good HC.

Are we supposing as long as he brings the former the latter wont matter either way?

Any particular reason do you imagine that he's spent 25 of his 30 years in the league as an assistant even though he's always had aspirations to be an HC and a guy like Reeves for example was an HC for 23 years straight?

My feelings exactly- if Jerruh is so gung-ho on Jason, then just hire him as head coach and roll the dice- they ain't winning a Super Bowl (or probably a division title) next year with Norv, Gibbs, or Wade anyway- that's a pipe dream.

Lofton could command some respect.

His wife taught at my jr high. She was my sisters bball coach.

Always thought he would end up around here in some capacity because he lived in the city(Oak Cliff) a long time.
