Colts' Peyton Manning out for 4-6 weeks

Peyton Manning had surgery on an infected left bursa sac in his left knee on Monday, which could knock the Pro Bowler out of the season opener. So now the Colts are looking at Jim Sorgi, possibly, as their starter for the first game at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Jim Sorgi.
And this brings me to the Cowboys.
There is a lot of consternation about the backup quarterback situation with Brad Johnson. Some wanted him cut last year. Some want him gone now. I'm not being Kevin Bacon here in Animal House, saying all is well at the end of the movie. I understand the worry.
Chris Simms' name has been mentioned as a possibility. Take a look at Simms. I might have looked at Bruce Gradkowski after he was cut by Tampa Bay but St. Louis claimed him. I'm for keeping a third QB on the 53-man roster this year to learn the offense to be the No. 2 in 2009.
But Johnson actually had his best showing of the off-season at the veteran mini-camp in June. No, he wasn't zinging the ball down the field, but that was never his game, even when he took Tampa Bay to a Super Bowl.
If something happened to Tony Romo and he were to miss 4-6 weeks, Johnson's not an awful option. Some things would have to change in the offense, obviously, to compensate for the differences in the quarterbacks' games.
Now, I think Manning will be back for the opener and all will be right in the Colts' world. But what happens if he goes down in the season? What happens if New England loses Tom Brady?
As a former Cowboys coach used to say, you can't just call 1-800-QUARTERBACK.
