Cory Procter will officially be a Cowboy next season

Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips
Once the Cowboys put the second-round tender on restricted free agent OL Cory Procter, there was never any question that he'd return to Valley Ranch next season. He made it official today by signing the one-year, $1.545 million contract.

Procter struggled at times when forced into starting duty because of LG Kyle Kosier's foot injury last season, but his versatility makes him a valuable backup. He filled in for Andre Gurode at center the last two games of the 2007 season and can play either guard spot.

Plus, I'm sure Jerry Jones didn't want to break up Free Reign, the rock band that features Procter on the drums, RT Marc Colombo as the lead singer and RG Leonard "Bigg" Davis on the bass. Calvin "Lucky" Watkins and I are eagerly anticipating seeing Free Reign at the Granada tomorrow night and will post a review of the show on this here blog over the weekend.

I'm pretty sure McMahon is incorrect. This doesn't guarantee Proctor will be a Cowboy next season. I'm almost positive since Proctor was a restrictive free agent, the Cowboys could cut ties at any point and not have it count against the salary cap. Adam? lol

I'm not as knowledgeable as Adam regarding the cap but you are correct as long as they do it before June 1st I believe.

Why is he a valuable backup if he can't play once he gets on the field? Because he can suck at either guard or center?

If he stays on the roster as a back up center it would make sense, but he got owned at LG...

Procter is terrible and I don't care how many spots he can play.

Cowboys re-sign OG Cory Procter to 1-year deal
The Dallas Cowboys have re-signed guard Cory Procter to a one-year contract.

Procter was supposed to back up Kyle Kosier but wound up starting 11 games last season. He also started twice the previous season.

Procter, who can also play center, arrived in Dallas in November 2005 when he was signed off the Detroit Lions’ practice squad.

He's not as bad as some suggest, IMO, but he's also not good enough either. We need depth on the OL. Our failed drafts are catching up to us quickly now. We must draft some replacements the next few drafts or we'll be forced to buy them on the FA market. Not the best option.

Please tell me he's the third option in case someone gets hurt. We are screwed if he sees significant playing time. His ineptitude nearly put Tony in the hospital.
