Cowboys can't afford to keep missing on offensive linemen

Jerry Jones doesn't want to sign another free-agent offensive lineman to an big-dollar deal. That means the Cowboys better draft at least a couple of offensive linemen this weekend who will develop into starters.

And, to put it politely, drafting offensive linemen has been a problem around Valley Ranch for more than a decade.

The starting five is set next season, although it's possible that a rookie could push Kyle Kosier at left guard. Jerry said the Cowboys feel good about their depth, although that's a debatable take, but he acknowledged the future of the line is a concern. Flozell Adams is nearing the end of his career, and the rest of the starters are in their 30s.

"You can't continue to have an offensive line made up of expensive, the most expensive free agents," Jerry said, "not when you are paying top receivers and quarterbacks and skill, or top pressure players, or some of the key players on defense.

"We've paid a price for some misses. I've said this before. We've paid a price for some misses, the Rogerses. We've paid the price because we had to go out, but we could afford to do it because we were in good shape at that particular time with our top skill players, so we could afford to go out and get the best of the free agents in the offensive line a couple of times.

"That's not where you want to be. How do you not get there is, you take a draft like we've got right now and try to pick with a second-, third-, fourth- or fifth-round pick a guy that's going to step up and eventually take Flozell Adams' place or take Colombo's place."

My question to Jerry Jones would be this:

What's the difference in paying a free agent to join the team or extending an incumbent already in place?

Andre Gurode's rookie contract wasn't expensive, but he also rode the bench for most of the contract before finally getting his head in the game on a one year deal after becoming a free agent.

So what's the difference?

If you find and develop a quality lineman in the draft you are going to want to keep him around and that requires a large contract when the time comes.

The offensive line is the most important unit on the team, it isn't a place to try and go cheap because you want a shiny toy or two out wide.

Gurode is the lone exception.

Yep and Colombo was somebody else's "problem" and we capitalized. Is it possible Free just needs 1-2 more years of development? Either way I still hope we draft some players to heat up the competition...

I think the point is that you can't give big money to everybody.

For every free agent you pay for, a team needs to have a relatively inexpensive starter as well.

Think about how many 'cheap' starters the Cowboys have?

I don't think I'd consider it a lot by NFL standards.

Heck, they've got backups like Carpenter making big money!

The entire offensive line is signed to above-average contracts.

This team needs to have a starter or two who play under their inexpensive rookie deals.

I'm all for drafting a few linemen.

For future starters, and to push a few complacent starters too.

I don't particularly want gurode at center. I think that he should move over and fill kosier's spot. The high snaps got to go.

I think Jerry means it would be nice to have a cheap rook starter, or two. Instead of high priced vet at EVERY position on OL.

I think we'd all love to start hitting on offensive linemen in the draft.

But if we do, they will eventually need to be paid just like everyone else.

Looking back, we've used 12 premium selections (1st-3rd) on offensive linemen since 1994 .

James Marten (3rd '07), Jacob Rogers (2nd '04), Stephen Peterman (3rd '04), Al Johnson (2nd '03), Solomon Page (2nd '99), Steve Scifres (3rd '97), Clay Shiver (3rd '96), Shane Hannah (2nd '95) and George Hegamin (3rd '94) were all colossal failures in Big D.

That is 9 players.

The 3 hits were Larry Allen (2nd '94), Flozell Adams (2nd '98) and Andre Gurode (2nd '02). LA is a potential Hall of Famer, Flo a decade long mainstay and G finally got his head on straight a few years back after almost flopping.

And NONE of them are justifying their pay for that matter either.

I would say that Gurode (lolable snaps and mental errors aside) and Davis are earning their money. The tackles and Cory Procter were the problem last year.

I thought last year was the worst in Cowboys history for bad oline play to dollars paid for it ratio. They were all terrible IMO.

Yeah as a unit they were awful, but I think there are individuals that perform. This year kind of reminded me of 2006 from that standpoint. Rivera was really bad and Adams was kind of mediocre, but the rest of the line was fine. So as a unit they weren't anything special.
