Cowboys corner: how much can Eagles change?

Cornerback Orlando Scandrick sums up the Cowboys stance on what Philadelphia will do differently in tomorrow night's wild card game.

"We really don't know what they're going to change up,'' Scandrick said. "I mean, I don't know how much they can change in less than a week. I know they are going to be coming out with nothing to lose.''

Why's that?

"They already lost to us,'' Scandrick said.

Good point.

"They've got to have some pride,'' Scandrick continued. "I mean, I know they will.

"They are going to come out and not be the same football team. They are going to try to get it going early to get some confidence going for them, get some momentum.''

Tony Romo vs. Philadelphia's blitz

The Eagles love to blitz. It was long-time defensive coordinator Jim Johnson's calling card, and his successor, Sean McDermott, likes to bring pressure too.

The Cowboys expect to see more blitzes Saturday than they saw last week in the regular-season finale and will have to come up with ways to beat the pressure. After last year's 44-6 debacle, Tony Romo said the offense was figured out by opponents. Earlier this week I asked Patrick Crayton if the blitz game has changed much in 2009 for the Cowboys and he said no. He said the execution has been better.

Against the blitz this season, Romo has completed 131-of-225 passes for 1,877 yards with seven touchdowns and three interceptions, according to Stats Inc. He was also sacked a staggering 23 times.

Last year, Romo was 96-of-164 against the blitz for 1,335 yards with six touchdowns and six picks. In 2007 the breakdown was: 86 of 143, 1,277 yards, nine TDs, four INTs. In '06 it was: 58 of 91, 741 yards, three touchdowns, four picks.

How has Romo fared against Philadelphia's blitz as a starter?

2006 - 4 of 7, 52 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT, 1 sack - L
2007 - 7 of 9, 124 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 0 sacks - W
2007 - 7 of 14, 103 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT, 2 sacks - L
2008 - 6 of 9, 58 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT, 0 sacks - W
2008 - 9 of 20, 65 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT, 1 sack - L
2009 - 15 of 22, 245 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 2 sacks - W
2009 - 5 of 8, 52 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT, 1 sack - W

There is not much any team can change this time of year and especially vs a team who sees you 2 times a year every year. Philly may add a wrinkle and may blitz a bit more but they are who they are and that is not going to change.

Philly is a desperate team and will take desperate measures. Cowboys just need to keep Romo from getting hurt and the game is theirs.

Just watch out for fake fg's/punts/onside kicks/flea flickers/reverses/half back passes/ WHEW. Ima be pissed if Philly wins on some bs trickery.

I think the Iggles are going to come out flying and throwing everything they have at us. If the Cowboys can weather that, and get into the half tied or with a lead, they will win. It's going to be a matter of holding them off, because we aren't going to come out of the gate and dominate right from the beginning, the Iggles hate the Cowboys too much to allow that two weeks in a row.

Dallas needs to start fast and put additional pressure on Philadelphia. Don't get complacent or comfortable because they are a quick strike offense....big plays are kind of how that team survives. If Dallas can get up by 14 and run the ball, then good things will happen.

Philly won't be able to connect down the field as much because of the max protection they'll need for McNabb.

Interestingly, Romo has been sacked as much in the last two seasons combined as McNabb was in just last weeks game.

I'd like to see them try to open with an onside kick again that we run back for a TD. That was pretty awesome when they tried that a few years ago.

We have a world class special teams coach now, so surprise on sides kicks should come as no surprise at all.

I dont think the Eagles used near as many screen passes. they are known as the best at that. Checking it out now, but I just don't see that many - at least in the first half.

I would bet they run a bunch tomorrow night.

Looking long term, McNabb has been sacked more in this season than Romo has been lifetime against Philly.

From the standpoint of Philly's blitz, I think its blitz has traditionally affected Romo in a much different way than it did, say, Troy. Troy became a sitting duck, and the sack count would rise. Romo doesn't get sacked, but I think when the Eagles get the better of Romo it's because they're able to disguise things and confuse him mentally. This is what I'll be looking for from Romo tomorrow. Does he look in command, like a Peyton running the offense, finding the open holes? Or is he unsure of what he's seeing? He's been in a hell of a zone for the past month.

I fully expect tomorrow's game to more closely mirror the game in Philly than it did last week's. I'd be shocked -- shocked! -- if we blow this team out again. I expect us to have to overcome adversity, perhaps even a 7-0 hole out of the gate. We're gonna have to earn this victory tomorrow.

Yeah, I think the matchups favor us. I think if this were a baseball or basketball playoff series, we easily move on to the next round. But I think Philly's coaching staff -- Reid, at least; don't know enough about McDermott yet -- is good enough to create a good, surprising strategy for one game.
