The NFL Network put together a list of the top 10 draft steals in league history.

There's at least one real head-scratcher on there -- Ray Guy was great, but how can you call a punter picked in the first round a steal? But they rightfully included 10th-round pick/Hall of Famer Roger Staubach, although I'd rank him a few slots higher than No. 10.

If nothing else, the above link is worth clicking to watch a video and reminisce about Roger the Dodger's greatness.

And I'll piggyback off the NFL Network's idea and present a list of the top 10 draft steals in Cowboys' history. (Note: Undrafted free agents not eligible.)

1. Roger Staubach, 10th round, 1964
2. Bob Hayes, 7th round, 1964
3. Rayfield Wright, 7th round, 1967
4. Emmitt Smith, 17th overall pick, 1990
5. Herb Scott, 13th round, 1975
6. Larry Cole, 16th round, 1968
7. Jethro Pugh, 11th round, 1965
8. Leon Lett, 7th round, 1991
9. Chad Hennings, 11th round, 1988
10. Larry Allen, 2nd round, 1994

I still can't call a 1st rounder a draft steal. Not even as great as Emmitt was.

If Nick Folk continues to put up good numbers I think he will be added to this list.

How about a FA steal......Tony Romo ......2 time Pro Bowler in 1.5 seasons?

CBS 11 has a cool draft game going. You have try and guess the greatest cowboys players drafted in each round from their list. The winner will be whoever comes the closest to one of the pros selections.

I think summerall, sham, galloway, luska, gosselin and a few more are picking also.

Its the first thing on the page.

Look at who he was drafted with and who was drafted above him. While I tend to agree with you oh wise one his draft were full of can't misess and he was considered too slow to play in the NFL.

If he was considered too slow to play in the nfl then he wouldn't have been drafted anywhere near the first round. He dropped because of his lack of speed but they knew he could play, most expected him to go top five before the draft.

herschel walker as a 5th rounder cannot crack your top 10? i really believe that walker would have become an all time great, if he was able to play with the cowboys for his entire career, but what we got for him in the trade market was really sweet.

Says somethings about Larry Allen to be labeled a steal..........2nd rounder.

Marion Barber
Jason Witten

I agree with this. Both of these guys, specially for where they were taken, have already proven to be way better than where they were drafted.

come on......Where is Everson Walls on that list???

Everson wasn't drafted.

I agree that Emmitt should not be considered for the list. He was a first round pick. That is not a steal. The Cowboys had to pay him first round money and it took them a while to get him signed because of it. They weren't getting him for cheap or stealing his services. Just because other teams missed on their evaluation of Emmitt doesn't mean that Dallas got a steal. They had him rated high enough to draft him with the 17th overall pick.
