DMN: Blog: Cowboys have an elite stretch-the-field guy

Excellent points.

Dale Hansen and Randy Galloway went on ridiculous rants about Irvin when he was first up for consideration and said they weren't sure that a guy is HOF-worthy for catching "10 yard outs" his whole career. Yet Irvin has a higher ypc average than many of the HOF types, past and present - Jerry Rice, Randy Moss, Marvin Harrison, Art Monk, Tim Brown, TO, Tory Holt - and significantly so in some cases.

I'm more concerned about a replacement for the 34 yr old TO than a compliment to him. Hopefully we can trade for or draft that guy soon.

This is my main concern.

We seem very slow to find replacements for our great players the last few years. It took us forever to replace Aikman...it appears we've finally replaced Emmitt...it took us until TO to have a bigtime threat at WR....We went several years after losing Deion to replace him.

You really can't force the draft and you don't want to overpay in FA. But we really need to be proactive in trying to find a WR.

I think sometimes Jerry gambles and hopes to find guys later in the draft. It worked with Romo and possibly Crayton. Maybe we have something in Stanback, Austin, or Hurd....or Amendola.

Imagine if Mike Sherrard didn't break his leg. Maybe the Cowboys wouldn't have drafted Irvin, but that would have been a great duo. I was a big Mike Sherrard fan. He did well his rookie year with us.

it's all about schemes--we just need to line up the bestwe have (which are better than maybe 28 other teams) and creatively put them in schemes that exploit the defense (something The Tuna and his staff were clueless about). Hopefully, with a year under his belt, Garrett will be even better.

That was a pretty gross injury. It was a simple TC drill IIRC. Didn't he kick himself in the leg?

I remember seeing that....

Yep, he also broke his leg again while jogging on the beach in Cali.

T.O. is not a "speed guy" nor a "possession" guy. Like Boldin and even Rice, Owens is run after the catch guy. Cowboys do not need a #2 receiver, as they already have a great one in Witten.

What they need is another legitimate #1 (does not matter if he is a speed guy, possession guy or RAC guy) opposite T.O. not only b/c of Owens age but in case of injury.

Right now there is no young receiver on the roster who has the potential to be a legit #1. Like the RBs, the WR spot opposite T.O.'s will be manned by committee, which is fine until the original #81 goes down.

Hurd will be in the 4 wide long before Amendola and Or Austin

so, your 4 wide looks like this:

Owens.....Crayton.....Hurd.....

yeah, you need someone else for a 4 wide...
