There are plenty of reasons to believe the Cowboys will select impact players in this draft despite the fact that they don't have a first-round pick.

Here are several of them:

Jason Witten
Bradie James
Patrick Crayton
Marion Barber
Jay Ratliff
Jason Hatcher
Nick Folk
Deon "Cricket" Anderson
Tashard Choice
Orlando Scandrick

Those are current members of the Cowboys' core that the team drafted with second-day picks. (The third round wasn't in the second day of the draft when in 2003, when Witten was picked, but it is now, so you get the point.) Jacques Reeves and Chris Canty are a couple other Cowboys' second-day picks who will start elsewhere next season.

Bill Parcells and Jeff Ireland get a lot of credit for most of those picks. But they were in Miami when the Cowboys drafted Choice and Scandrick last year, and you can make the case that those two guys were the best players in their rounds. That proves that director of college and pro scouting Tom Ciskowski, college scouting coordinator Chris Hall and the rest of the guys who who stayed in the Cowboys' scouting department are pretty good at what they do.

The Cowboys will have 10 second-day selections after the compensation picks are handed out. I'm willing to wager on two things: 1) Jerry Jones will make draft day interesting by moving up, down and all around; 2) the Cowboys will find at least a few pretty good players.

Good article and gotta agree.

The reason we've been competitive the last few years is some good drafting...which feels good to say after we had some really terrible consecutive years of it.

Good because we have a few job openings.

The vet Ciskowski really shone last year Day Two ... Scandrick was a 3rd round value on Ciskowski's board, and Choice probably about the same ...

Makes me excited to wake up that second-day Sunday and listen to Norm Hitzges reel off our half-dozen second-day picks on the Ticket 1310 AM .....

Maybe Ciskowski is a late-blooming version of Pioli.

Are there any USC or Michigan second-string QBs we should look at :) hm ...

IMO, if the Cowboys can come close to the draft haul from last year, we have to be considered NFC favorites.

Just stick to the board and all is well.

not sure why hatcher is on that list but the rest of it does represent some great value picks after the first round.
