We're told that the Cowboys' experiment with the Razorback, their version of the Wildcat formation, wasn't just a spring fling.

Yet they've yet to work on that chapter of their playbook during training camp. It looks like they'll wait until they can enjoy the privacy of their Valley Ranch practice facility before the Razorback pops its head out again.

"Gotta wait," Patrick Crayton said. "It's like an upcoming feature. Coming soon!"

Even Crayton, who is known to flap his gums, is keeping tight-lipped about the details of the Razorback package. He declined to say whether he would be the trigger man in the formation. Crayton and Tashard Choice worked as Razorback QBs during the spring, and college QB Isaiah Stanback is another option.

The Cowboys obviously want to keep their opponents guessing.

With any luck, hopefully it stays under wraps until there's that key moment in the game when we need to confuse the defense in order to get a game-winning first down or something.

I'm glad they're keeping it under wraps. More defenses to study for once the season starts.

I'm hoping they implement the swinging gate formation. I'm sure it will be the new Wildcat for the 2009 season!

I think it is good as a change of pace gadget play I do have concern that if you use it too often it becomes non effective as was the case in Miami. To start the year it confused the defense but the more Miami would show it the less it worked. To me there is nothing wrong with having this in the playbook and throwing it out there from time to time but I think it would be a mistake to make it a big part of the offense.

I was hoping they would try this new wishbone I have been hearing about.

;)

What I meant was no need for trickery if your base stuff is that good.

With the team's inability to run or stop a screen play on a consistant basis through the reigns of multiple head coaches, I find it difficult to imagine their attempt at running the razorback not resulting in something ranging from no gain to total disaster.

I agree that the bread and butter of the offense should be your base offense but nothing wrong with a bit of trickery or different look being thrown at a defense.

If your trickery is used strategically to take advantage of the defense and score more points, then yes, there is a need for trickery. You know, there's this new thing called the forward pass...

I think we could use the Wishbone with Stanback and Felix. That way, we can just get rid of Stanback due to injury once and for all! :laugh2:

I'm just hoping he has put these injuries behind him and competes strong for a roster spot. I want these guys pressing each other for jobs and may the best guys win.

I am ok with tricks plays on rare occasions, but when they go bad - they go BAD.... it is a big momentum for defenses when they stuff'em

One of these days I wish we could be a trend setter again instead of bring up the rear.

And Philly or NYG will take it back for a TD to put us down 10 early. Bet it!
;)

Dallas' trickery scares me. They are not that well coached or disciplined to be running fancy stuff yet. Lets get the basics down first.

1) Snap the ball to the QB not over his head
2) Don't kickoff out of bounds
3) Flo know the snap count
4) Romo know when you are out of the pocket
5) Stanglass know your role and get out of town.......

The most effective possibilities out of this formation would be with Choice taking the snap with Felix crossing him in motion at the snap forcing the defense to make a decision. Most importantly and critical to the play will be the choice Choice makes in reading and executing the right decision in a nano second, hand off or not? IF Choice chooses right, big plays will result more than not, choose wrong and .....well. Oh' and under no circumstance should the pass be an opyion here imo.
