Connor Hughes told a Virginia newspaper that he outperformed Shaun Suisham in a December kicking competition for the Dallas Cowboys but did not get the job because of a lack of experience.

The Virginia Gazette, of Williamsburg, Va., quotes Hughes as saying ``despite doing the best, my lack of experience was a concern for them.'' The Cowboys went with Suisham, who had NFL experience, in place of the released Nick Folk. Suisham made 5-of-8 field-goal tries with the Cowboys. Two of the misses drained energy from the team during the playoff loss at Minnesota.

The Cowboys have signed Hughes, and he is expected to compete for the placekicker position. Hughes' pro experience consists of one season in the Arena Football League with Philadelphia and going to camp with New Orleans and Pittsburgh. He made all five field-goal tries in NFL exhibitions with those teams, but only one of the attempts was for more than 29 yards.

"This happened only by the grace of God," Hughes told the newspaper. "This doesn't make sense to me how it would be a possibility, but it somehow worked out.

"I was invited to work out a few weeks ago with four other guys, and despite doing the best, my lack of experience was a concern for them. I guess they didn't feel comfortable with how he [Suisham] finished the year and decided after the season to give me a shot. I thought it might happen but had no real guarantees."

Hughes credits his faith for his persistence.

"I think, most of all, I know in regards to football that nothing is guaranteed and nothing is helpless," he said. "As long as I go in and work hard, I have confidence as a believer because of Romans 8:28, that God will work all things for my good, whether that be to make the team or not. As Proverbs 16:9 speaks, I have plans, but God will direct my path, and beyond that I will always say, 'it is well.' "

Well that was stupid. You can have all the experience in the world. If you suck it doesn't matter.

I wonder if we draft a kicker or take the gamble that we can sign a good Rookie Free Agent.

uh let me ask you this question then hostile?
say this year we somehow win like 12 games or 13, but 3 of them we won by a field goal at the end of the game/ what do you have to say about kickers then?

Jerry, please spend the $$$, frontload a contract and sign a proven kicker.

If Jerry agrees to pay the money, who would you suggest that he sign?

Why would you expect me to say anything different than I already do? I won't.

Kickers are people, too! :laugh2: If they're responsible for kicking three game-winning FG's next year, then I'll be extremely happy.

Jerry tried the big money FA route once with Vanderjagt, I doubt he tries it again.

So will I. It still won't change my opinion of them. Folk kicked a doozie against the Bills and was from my alma mater. I even wrote the Cowboys about him when we needed a Kicker. It never changed my opinion.

Well, I was just wondering what you would thought if we won some games late in the year due to the kicker. I look at it that everyone on the team has something to contribute and help the team.

Anyway, I like the way Hughes had this to say;

"This happened only by the grace of God," Hughes told the newspaper. "This doesn't make sense to me how it would be a possibility, but it somehow worked out.

Hughes credits his faith for his persistence.

God knows all things and may have found us an excellent kicker for us for along time because everyone is important in the eyes of God. .

It certainly doesn't help when it sure seemed like this was the WORST season for kickers EVER. Garrett Hartley was the only real, clutch kicker in the postseason. Even Hartley in the regular season missed a game-winner against the Bucs. Kickers; you just never know these days.

Cool, I understand about your thinking on some kickers, some are daffy. I have respected some though like Jason Elam, Morten Anderson to name a few. Even Toni Fritcsh was daffy too and zanny.

Thankfully, though the kicker situation wasn't good, it wasn't the reason we lost the playoff game. I'm not sure I could have lived with a shanked field goal from Suisham as the reason we didn't advance for the whole off-season.
