The Cowboys hoped that Ken Hamlin would join Marion Barber and Terence Newman in agreeing to long-term deals yesterday.
Jerry Jones said the Cowboys and Kennard McGuire, Hamlin's agent, had serious discussions over the last three or four days but couldn't reach an agreement. The Cowboys put the franchise tag on Hamlin, but he wants a multi-year contract after proving himself with a Pro Bowl campaign after signing a one-year deal last summer.
Hamlin wants to be a Cowboy for a long time. The Cowboys want Hamlin here for a long time.
All they have to do now is agree on the numbers, which they weren't able to do after hours of negotiating over the last few days.

Todd Archer reported yesterday that Tony Romo restructured his contract to create some salary cap room for the Cowboys. So did Leonard Davis, Jerry told reporters today.
It's not like Romo and Davis lost money. They just converted salaries into bonus money, allowing the Cowboys to spread the cap hit over the duration of the contracts.
Romo will have a base salary of the veteran's minimum the next two seasons. He got paid the difference between the his previously agreed upon salaries and the minimum in a bonus. Davis agreed to do the same thing with his 2009 salary.
Those restructurings freed up $3 million under this year's cap and $8 million under next year's cap.

So says Jerry Jones.
But Terry Glenn and the Cowboys' brass don't believe it's in anybody's best interests to test his surgically repaired knee during OTAs, which are basically teaching sessions. As a result, the plan is for Glenn to continue to sit out these sessions.
"I assume, and I think he does too, that he'll be fine come training camp," Tony Romo said. "I think he'll surprise you with just his level of play."
Negotiations not necessarily about money

Yeah, I know. You can't stand it when a player who just signed an eight-figure contract claims that it wasn't about the money.
But I believe it the way that Terence Newman twists it. It's about ego, and the dollars are simply a status symbol.
Newman was rich beyond his wildest dreams before he signed his six-year, $50.2 million extension yesterday. This is the second $12 million signing bonus of his career, and with Newman admitting to being a bit cheap, the first bonus has done nothing but collect interest.
But he considers himself an elite NFL player, so he wanted to be paid like his peers.
"It wasn't about me trying to get rich or anything like that," Newman said. "It was just about being recognized as one of the top corners in the league."
