The draft went by without the Cowboys taking a kicker, which may surprise some of you but not the loyal followers of this blog. The Cowboys will roll with David Buehler and Connor Hughes during the off-season.
Hughes suffered a minor hamstring injury last week and will need about a week of rest before he's in action. Buehler and new kicking consultant Chris Boniol have been working twice a week since Buehler's returned from California. He talked about getting rid of a false step in his approach to speed things up.
Every kick this off-season, essentially, is a pressure kick for Buehler. If he - or Hughes - do not live up to the job, then the Cowboys can find a veteran, like a Matt Stover or John Carney, provided he wants to play again. Buehler actually worked out with Carney earlier this off-season.
"The whole thing is a gamble to some degree, but this looks like a solid way to go about it," owner and GM Jerry Jones said. "We'd like to see David feel good about the competition, and then you bring a veteran player in here right off the bat and you've got a possible progress stopper."
