Dr. Wade Phillips said Terence Newman strained his groin after getting tangled up with another player during this morning's practice. Phillips isn't ready to put a timetable on Newman's return, but he emphasized that the groin is strained, not pulled.

He'd probably say Newman was day-to-day, except that was the term used on Greg Ellis for more than a month last summer, leading to a testy exchange between Phillips and a high-pitched reporter during a press conference.

First-round CB Mike Jenkins got the first-team reps at left CB after Newman's injury this morning. Adam "Pacman" Jones played the left side in Tennessee, but his reps this morning all came on the right side.

"He can play both sides," Phillips said. "We probably won't change anything, because we've got enough rotation that he'll get plenty of reps along with Jenkins and [Orlando] Scandrick along with those guys on the other side."

Ok...I'm not sure what that means.

Is strained worse?

They should rest Newman to make sure he is 100%. The young guys need the reps anyway. The more reps they get the better off the team will be later in the year.

I think the terms being used (pulled versus strained) seems like semantics...it looks like either term can be used http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strain_(injury) to describe this injury.:(

muscle tears and tendons stretch, tear off bone or snap somewhere along the tendon. A strain is layman for less than a pull. But they're all tears. It's actually Class I-IV. I is microscopic tears in the muscle and IV is a complete disruption of the muscle with a palpable defect and signs of bleeding. It's just a convenient way to standardize it and make a verbal shortcut.

I. 2-8 weeks generally for recovery. Little to small chance for worsening it but uncomfortable with some decline in efficiency.

IV. Bad.

Yeah-this is great news.

While these injuries can be lingering, nonetheless it's not serious and he can at least get a week or so of rest, to the point where our young guys can get some reps in.

I think this is the most important thing to do in camp.

A stain is extremely minor. A weeks rest or so and plenty of ice and he's good to go. He'll be just fine!!!

No comment from Terence Newman

Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips

Terence Newman watched the afternoon practice in shorts and a T-shirt after straining his groin this morning. He was in no mood to talk about his injury.

"Might as well save it," Newman said while walking past reporters after practice.

This is the second straight summer that Newman, who will turn 30 in September, suffered an injury. He partially tore his plantar fascia when the Broncos were practicing against the Cowboys at Valley Ranch last year. That injury caused him to miss the first two games of last season and limited him for several more weeks.

This is expected to be a day-to-day deal.

Ok....I always try to read into things. Does he mean that he intends to save himself for when it counts? or Does he mean that he's going to save his comment because his injury is worrying him?

I believe he meant the reporters might as well save their breath cause he wasnt talking...hence the "He was in no mood to talk about his injury."

I took it to mean "Save your breath don't ask" meaning that he probably wasn't in the mood to give a quote that could either make it sound worse than it is, or be crucified for saying it wasn't bad then ends up sitting for a week.

Since he gave no info, the reporters have to fall-back on the "Newman Won't Speak" option.
