Don't count on Keyshawn coming back to Cowboys

Several folks have e-mailed me to ask whether Keyshawn Johnson, who was cut by the Panthers, might return to the Cowboys.

I seriously doubt it. Here's why:

1) The Cowboys need to develop their young receivers. WR was a need in the draft because Terrell Owens and Terry Glenn are old by NFL standards -- and might not be around much longer. The Cowboys' top three receivers rank among the best groups in the league.

2) Keyshawn came to Dallas because he was a Parcells Guy. As you might have heard, the Tuna is no longer in town.

3) There might not be enough balls or microphones for Keyshawn and T.O. to share.

Having said all this, I'm all for Keyshawn coming back. You can never have enough quote machines in a locker room.

I like Key but I don't expect him back in Dallas. I think if feels like playing another year or 2 he will get that chance but not in Dallas.

To each his own, but I don't get why so many people love Keyshawn so much. Isn't it obvious that he's pretty much finished?

No thanks.

He was here because of one guy and one guy only...and that guy is eating donuts up in Saratoga.

Key was a very solid guy for us for 2 seasons, gave us his all and very few problems. But we got him back when we were rebuilding and needed a solid reciever, not a game breaker. OUr needs are different now and he no longer fits in. Not to mention BP is gone.

Parcells is NO LONGER the head coach so therefore you will not see Johnson in Dallas, thank goodness. This guy always thought he was better than what he truly was, I know you're supposed to think highly of yourself but c'mon man you're a career possession receiver for the lovva.....

Not wanting him back is one thing, but his contribution to us in 2004 and 2005 is undeniable.

I thought his was pretty inconsistent in his first year...ran alot of bad routes..etc.

His second season was much better.

Ultimately, for an overall number one pick, I don't think he has had the career one would have expected.

I would hope he retires, and comes over as a coach to teach Hurd to be a posession masta like he was... I mean, he has as good of a chance coming here as he did every other team he played for, he never really had an allegiance to any of them...

i would like to see him join the team as a player/coach;

if he is willing to join the cowboys as a backup, help teach our young wrs, be on the team for specifically big 3r downs, and goal line situations, along with goal line situations, along with blocking possibly for big run situations & blocking in backfield like he did acouple of times against carolina against julius peppers, yep that rights julius peppers, you name me a another wr that could do that?

then dont forget, Jerry Jones knows him, he would be insurance for us, in case TO has hamstring problems, remember TO had hamstring injury in training camp and he didnt play till the 2nd or 3 game of the season. Remember we lost that 1st game against Jacksonville, on several key 3rd down passes, and TO hurt his finger in another game and wasnt same player afterwards dropping key passes.

then you got to remember TO isnt running now and staying in shape due to him hurt finger, so the hamstrings problem may come back, so are you sure you want to go with a young unproven wr for start of season?

then you got to remember, Jerry Jones and Keyshawn are good friends, Jerry said that he wanted Key to be in public relations after football season when he retired, so that factors in. Then, remember Terry Glenn has a bone on bone issue in his knee i think, so are you sure you want to go with young unproven wrs,

we all know with scanback not being able to run for another 2 months or so, his timing etc will be off, then he has to relearn wide receiver positioning, thats alot to ask of a wr that hasnt played wr in like 3 years.

so, i say if its a reasonable contract offer, get keyshawn, tell him what he will do and wont do, that he can be a player/coach too and help us get to the super bowl.

Finally, remember when keyshawn left, and jerry jones signed TO, the cowboys tried 3 phone calls to resign Keyshawn, so dont rule it out, sure he will be 35, but just use him in certain situations, that will be something else that defenses will have to prepare for, then you can bring scanback and wr richardson along slowly, as well as miles austin and hurd.

remember we kept 3 tes last year, the 2 TE formation is being scraped for a blocking fullback, we have Hoyte that can play fullback and linebacker on key 3rd and 1 downs on defense, while anderson learns. Most likely unless anderson wows people in preseason you can have him on pratice squad till he gets the hang of it. At same time, with TO, Glenn, Crayton, Keyshawn, Austin & Hurd, with Scanback mainly playing punt returner till he gets wr down, you can come out in 3 wide receiver sets and 4 wide receiver sets, with the 4 wide receiver sets, thats something that parcells refused to do, so you would have 3 good wrs in that 3 and 4 wr set.

TO could play one wr, and Keyshawn on certain situations the other one, with Glenn in the slot, then whom is going to stop us on defense, that would spread out the defense, and you could run or pass.

never say never and close the door behind you, check it out first, go over options with reasoning over the good and the bad, then decide.
