The Cowboys made it clear that signing DeMarcus Ware to a long-term extension was their top off-season priority.
There is no indication that Ware's deal will get done before the season opener.
"We're in the process, but we don't have those kinds of deadlines as far as time," said Jerry Jones, who declined to discuss specifics of the negotiations with agent Pat Dye Jr. "Never do, never put that on, but we're working as we should be with his agent to move it forward."
Ware will eventually get a deal in the neighborhood of Commanders DT Albert Haynesworth's record-setting deal for a defensive player. Ware, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract, would be a restricted free agent the next two years if the collective bargaining agreement is not extended.
It certainly isn't a bitter contract stand-off, though. Ware has never threatened to hold out and participated in the Cowboys' voluntary off-season conditioning program and workouts. He's focused on football now and isn't discussing his contract negotiations with the media, but he compared himself to a Ferrari at one point this off-season, saying that his value would only appreciate.
