Draft wish list

Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips
The Cowboys enter the off-season with three major needs: WR, CB and RB. In the interest of helping Jerry and Co. as much as possible, here are the players at each position I recommend targeting.

CB Aqib Talib (Kansas): The Richardson Berkner product is a big (6-2, 205) playmaking cornerback, as he showed with a pick six that was the key play in Kansas' Orange Bowl win over Virginia Tech. He's a phenomenal athlete who Kansas occasionally used at receiver and might be able to contribute as a return man. He would be a huge upgrade over Jacques Reeves as the third corner and would ensure that the Cowboys have a cornerback with the size to match up with tall receivers long after Anthony Henry leaves Valley Ranch. I've seen him go everywhere from mid-first round to No. 31 in mock drafts. He'd be worth trading up a few spots from No. 22.

WR Malcolm Kelly (Oklahoma): His tendency to disappear for stretches is troubling, but the 6-4, 219-pound Longview native has a T.O.-like blend of size and athleticism. He'd give the Cowboys the deep threat they need to complement T.O., and he's a prospect that could eventually replace the Original 81 as Tony Romo's favorite target. Snatch him up if he slips to No. 28.

RB Jamaal Charles (Texas): There are doubts that the 6-1, 205-pound Charles will be durable enough to be an NFL feature back, but the Cowboys aren't looking for a 20-carry-per-game guy. They need a breakaway threat to serve as a change of pace to Marion "The Barbarian" Barber's punishing style. Charles, a Big 12 track star before he decided to focus on football, would definitely add big-play potential to an already explosive offense. The Port Arthur native would make a fine second-round pick.

in particular i like Talib.... especially given his talent as a return man.

I like Talib. I'd be stoked with Cason, Talib, or McKelvin. If we don't pick one of these guys up...:bang2:

Talib's stock could depend a lot on his 40 time. He got smoked by Jordy Nelson against Kansas State.

Talib does not have the speed or real quickness to be a top CB.

Watch out for Jordy, he is just getting his feet wet at WR. Could be the next Matt Jones, lol.

That was one of the reasons for my comment. Talib is an excellent college corner, but "phenomenal athlete"? No way.

And Nelson's one of my favorite sleepers. He's surprisingly fast for how big he is, and he's tough and reliable.

I am a big Malcolm Kelly fan.

Bring him to Dallas. All he does is CATCH the ball.

IF Dallas is smart they won't trade any of their picks and just choose the best players on the board, yes even it's a pass rushing DE/OLB :laugh2:

If you already haven't, you Nelson fans should check out nfl.com's draft page. They have video with Mayock's take on Nelson (mentions him beating Talib).

They've got a vid of Jeff Ireland as well...if your still interested in what he might do in Miami.

Thanks man, that was good.

I had no idea Jordy was getting to be such a big star. :)

Mayock is right, though -- quickness is what he lacks. Problem he'll have at the NFL level is getting separation. But he is big and sneaky fast.

I was high on Talib until the Kansas / Kansas State game. My goodness, Jordy Nelson owned him. He made big play after big play on Talib, and not by being physical, but outrunning him on a "Go" route to start the game (just for 1 example). His speed is suspect. Besides, you have to ask yourself the question, does the 2007 crop of Big 12 WRs that Talib faced really offer analysts a NFL worthy baseline by which to judge a CB?

Just asking...

Great Blue has Nelson with a 4.62 and Talib with a 4.5. YouTube tells another story.

Valid points.

I'm more in love with the idea of drafting a CB in the first, more than i am with any one particular player (although I really like what I've seen from McKelvin in the Senior Bowl practices). Talib's detractors all seem to base thier opinions on that one game, which is still valid, but it is only one game.
However, if there are CB's that didn't have that "one game" then they obviously have an advantage.

I'll leave it to Wade, Jerry, and Ciskowski to figure out which one of these guys is the real deal between McKelvin, Jenkins(s), Cason, Talib, Tribble, Smith, Cromartie, etc, etc,... but I want at least one of them in the first.

My email reply from Drew Boylhart (thehuddlereport.com):

Q) Does Aquib Talib have the speed and skills to be a NFL CB?

Drew) "I think (Aquib Talib) has to play safety. He needs the play in front of him. I don't think he has the quickness to be a CB, and he takes too many chances. As a Safety he would be like Ed Reed style of player."
