Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips

Emmitt Smith made an appearance at the morning's practice. He stopped by with his son on the way to the golf course, sticking around for the whole workout and spending some time with the running backs.

There's been a lot of debate around these parts about whether Jerry erred by drafting Felix Jones instead of Rashard Mendenhall. The NFL's all-time leading rusher believes the Cowboys picked the right back.

"I think Mendenhall is a very good back," Emmitt said. "I just think Felix has a lot better hip movement and cuts better in traffic."

Emmitt gave the backs pointers on how to run routes and get separation from linebackers. Jones, who grew up a Cowboys fan during Emmitt's glory days, called it "information that's going to help me carry on for the rest of my career."

Jones didn't get too wide-eyed when approached in the middle of practice by Emmitt, since the rookie didn't see the legend until he was a few feet away. And they only chatted for a few minutes.

"Man, it was amazing seeing somebody of his stature coming around," Jones said. "And then coming around to give me some advice ... I appreciated that."

I love Felix's enthusiasm and workmanlike attitude. I hope he has a very successful career as a Cowboy. I"ll be routing for him.

Our ex-players are so dedicated to the team. Even a vagabond like Deion. It really lets you know how together that group of players really was.

Emmitt can actually give one heck of a speech.

He just sucks on ESPN for some reason.

1a Felix Jones RB arkansas- This is the most disappointing pick IMO and i feel as if Jerry dropped the ball. Not only was a better RB on the board at the time of this pick the highest rated player left on our board was still there. He has the biggest bust factor on him in this draft and we will quickly regret this pick its because of his lack of pass blocking ability him going down easily or his lack of big plays.

Thats's why I was happy that Parcells left. He wouldn't allow former Cowboys around too often but would bring ole Giant guys around like Jim Burt. Wade has given the okay for the old guys to return.

They're not only close to the team but they're also extremely close to JJ. Irvin, Emmitt, Deion and others speak very highly of JJ, it's so obvious how close they are to him. They really respect and luv him alot. I always admired that about JJ as the owner and GM.

Now they are. When BP was here he pretty much excluded them it seemed

Love how it is the family atmosphere that Wade instilled. Old and current Cowboys are still family. Irvin, Newton, Emmitt, Aikman, Deion and the list continues. Anytime they can be involved with your current team, it will only help the current players.

Not to mention its just great to see they still care about the team.

FJ really has a very likeable personality. Not sure what it is but it seems like he has a very quiet confidence about himself. I think we got a good one here.

Now I know FJ is faster but do any of the old timers see a little Preston Pearson in him?

No. FJ doesn't look like Preston to me. Pearson was not fast. But he could catch the ball and just knew how to get open. He wasn't that good of a RB compared to his receiver abilities. But he was good enough.
