We interrupt all this "team in chaos" talk for a Marion Barber injury update. The injured running back is supposed to practice today. The dislocated toe and calf injury appear to be getting better.
"He can run straight ahead without any problem," coach Wade Phillips said. "But yesterday as far as him being able to cut well, we weren't to that point."
I called up Duane Thomas earlier this week and asked him about playing with pain. He had a big toe injury in the middle of the 1971 season. He missed two games and then led the team to Super Bowl VI.
"Everyone's pain tolerance is completely different," Thomas said. "Barber is tough in certain areas and psychologically, he didn't feel he was ready, so what? If he wasn't ready to rise to the occasions at this particular point and time, then fine."
Thomas also had a great line about just overall toughness. When someone asked him what college he attended, Thomas gave this fan a rather matter-of-fact answer.
"The school I went to was the school of you get in front of me, and I'll kick your [expletive] or you'll kick my [expletive]," Thomas said. "That's the conference I'm from."
