DON'T GIVE THE BALL AWAY: The Cowboys saw this in the home opener against the New York Giants. Four turnovers led to 24 New York points and a last-second loss. If they can just keep out of their way, they can beat any team in the NFL. Historically, Tony Romo rebounds well after losses. The Cowboys have suffered back-to-back losses with Romo as the starter just once and that came in the close of the 2008 season. In the games in which he has thrown none or one interception in his career as a starter, the Cowboys own a 25-7 record. Four times Romo has had at least three interceptions in a game in his career, and he has not had more than one in any of his next games.
A TALE OF TWO JAKES: Is Jake Delhomme the quarterback that threw four interceptions against Philadelphia in the season opener? Or the quarterback who threw for 308 yards in Week 2 against Atlanta? In three regular-season games against the Cowboys, Delhomme has three touchdown passes and three interceptions. The Cowboys are looking for their first sack and forced turnover of the season, and Delhomme is prone to both. He was sacked three times in his last meeting vs. Dallas in 2005, all by DeMarcus Ware. He does not move around well and the Panthers have not developed a consistent threat opposite Steve Smith. The Cowboys must contain Smith and vary the looks they give Delhomme in order to end their season-long streaks.
GET THEM DOWN ON THE GROUND: Last week against New York the Cowboys had to prepare for a powerful back in Brandon Jacobs and a quicker back in Ahmad Bradshaw. They did well, save for a spell in the third quarter where both broke loss. DeAngelo Williams is as much as a threat for the Panthers as Felix Jones is for the Cowboys. Williams has yet to break free, averaging just 3.9 yards per carry in the first two games after averaging 5.5 yards a carry in 2008 and scoring 18 rushing touchdowns. The Cowboys' front must be disciplined because he will break off a run and reverse field to use his speed to pull away from defenders. And the No. 2 runner, Jonathan Stewart, is averaging 5 yards a carry in the first two games.
BY LAND OR BY AIR: In the season opener Tony Romo threw for a career-high 353 yards and three touchdowns at Tampa Bay largely because the Buccaneers secondary had their difficulties. Against New York, the Cowboys ran for 251 yards as Marion Barber and Felix Jones spliced together big gains. Carolina has a the No. 3 ranked pass defense, but of the seven touchdowns given up by the defense five have come through the air. And the Panthers have been worked by the tight ends in the first two weeks. Philadelphia's Brent Celek caught six passes for 37 yards and a score. Atlanta's Tony Gonzalez had seven catches for 71 yards and a TD. Hello, Jason Witten and Martellus Bennett.
