Glenn still mending

As we mentioned earlier, Cowboys WR Terry Glenn is still a little limited, and was the only player at today's practice that wasn't in shoulder pads.

In his season debut Sunday, he was out there for less than 10 plays and continues to work back from the knee surgeries he had in August and September. Coach Wade Phillips said that the idea is to have him full go once the team gets into game week.

“He’ll do everything, starting Monday,” Phillips said. “We limited him some on some of the things, but he ran quite a few routes today.”

Phillips also seemed encouraged on four guys who sat out Sunday -- C Andre Gurode, CB Terence Newman, NT Jay Ratliff, S Patrick Watkins -- saying that only Gurode was limited in any way today. And he expects all four to be at full strength, or as close to it as could be expected for this point of the season, come Jan. 13.

Most teams would never have kept a spot on the roster for a player with Terry Glenn's injury.

Even in a limited role, TG will take the offense up to an entirely different level, even if Terrell Owens is playing with one foot in a cement walking boot.

This is all great news.

All I can go on is the Washington game. Glenn looked very slow and fragile. I think we looked better w/o him.

I know little used Miles Austin has been getting the business for dropping those passes.

I found it funny that Wade Phillips said they didn't activate rookie wide receiver Isaiah Stanback because he was worried the conditions would make it extremely hard to catch the ball.

Sky Miles barely has more game experience as a wideout than Stanback does.

If Austin was routinely dropping balls in practice and the coaches were worried about his hands, we'd have heard about it during training camp, practices, etc.

He's just inexperienced.

Anyone remember Terry Glenn's first season in Big D?

Some claimed Glenn had the best set of hands in the NFL and he had plenty of drops that season. Glenn said the following year it was just the nervousness of being on a new team in a new town.

And he was a veteran.

But I've seen posts on sites comparing Austin to Randal Freakin' Williams, the 4.0 forty who couldn't even get on the field as a wideout.

We can always get better at receiver and the starters are both on the backend of their careers, but Austin is a good prospect.

We didn't keep him as a sixth receiver last season after coming to camp as an undrafted player out of Monmouth just for the hell of it. Austin didn't start returning kicks until Tyson Thompson was injured and landed on IR.

Austin was beyond raw as a wideout, but we kept him because we saw something.

I don't know what he might become, but the kid has worked his butt off to get where he is and will be coming back for another camp this summer.

Not much to go on considering he was in for a total of maybe 7 plays.

Like to hear more about teaching hands. I'm old enough to remember being taught to catch the ball with one's body.

Its not unusual for a guy to look good in practice and stink in games, and vice versa. Austin has dropped balls before- its not unusual for him. Its also the reason he has not gotten many oppurtunities. Sadly, he is looking more and more like another Randall Williams.

Jerry Rice couldn't catch a cab at an airport his first year, but we see how that turned out....

Randall Williams couldn't get opened, and couldn't return kick offs. So i'm thinking he plays in one game, and we've already thrown him off the bus? Wow!, tough crowd.

I only noticed him twice. Once on the slant that got picked off, that was a great play by Springs. Then again when he beat Smoot badly, and Smoot had to grab him or it would have probably been a TD.

I liked seeing that.

Miles Austin should be fine. If anything, his abilities on Kick Returns will give him a great shot at making the team next year.

The biggest impact on whether he has a future at Wide Receiver is:
1) Injuries
2) How much value Wade Phillips puts on this one game. I know he placed alot of emphasis on 1 Preseason Game for Bobby Carpenter, which he didn't play well and he hasn't hit the field yet.

Everyone has to remember that the guy was going up against the Commanders #1 defense. He also showed the ability to run routes and to get open.

I agree... I'm not a believer in ditching a player for having a bad (basically) first game. If that were the case, Romo would've been long gone after that first giant game.

Now if he continues to drop passes like that, i'll be the first to pack his bags.

I think the biggest hurdle Terry Glenn has to overcome is the mental hurdle all players who have suffered major injuries have to overcome, which is to stop focusing on the body part that was injured and start playing football.

Glenn probably spent most of the limited time he was out there focusing on his knee and trying to make sure it didn't get re-injured.

Once he starts playing more, he will eventually forget about the injury and focus more on the other aspects of the game.
