Sportday NFL writer Rick Gosselin chatted with readers Wednesday afternoon and answered a number of questions about this month's NFL draft, the Cowboys and other football-related questions. A sampling of those questions:

Mark F asks...: Why on earth would the cowboys draft a receiver instead of an offensive lineman?

Rick Gosselin: Unless Dez Bryant slid to them at 27, I don't think wide receiver is a position the Cowboys would strongly consider in the first round. You can get a quality wideout into the third and fourth rounds of this and every draft. You can't get the same quality along the offensive line or at safety in this draft.

Steve asks...: Rick, when one looks at how the Pats and Eagles have accumulated so many picks in this year's "deep" draft, doesn't it demonstrate that the Cowboys draft of last year was a real waste of picks? I know it takes a few years to fully ascertain, but those teams knew last year's draft wasn't comparable in talent to this one, and the Cowboys blew opportunites last year to combine picks to trade up or into this year's draft.

Rick Gosselin: First off, I don't think this is as deep a draft as it has been portrayed. Some positions are very deep (DT, TE), others not so (QB, HB, interior OL and LB). But I'm of the belief you build a championship team through the draft. The Patriots and Eagles have always stockpiled draft picks and wound up with two of the four best record in the 2000 decade. They figured this out a long time ago -- the draft is the backbone for success. The Eagles have five picks in the first 90 selections. They'll get five contributors and as many as three starters. The higher you draft, the more quality you find. I've never quite figured out why the Cowboys always want to trade down. I'd have traded up a few spots in the second last April and landed a Max Unger --not traded back into the third and landed a Robert Brewster. Unger was a walk-in starter on the OL for Seattle, Brewster a developmental project.

Tim asks...: Hey Goose, do you like Anthony Davis for the Cowboys? He's got a lot of talent and is still young.
Rick Gosselin: The Cowboys would have to trade up in the first round to get Davis. Historically, quality offensive tackles do not last long in the first round. Davis is a quality offensive tackle.

Larry asks...: where will Colt McCoy go in the draft? The same question for Jordan Shipley.

Rick Gosselin: I like McCoy in the second and Shipley in the third. Shipley can help you instantly as a kick returner as he develops into an NFL-caliber wide receiver.

Fred in Allen asks...: What surprises do you expect in the first round?
Rick Gosselin: The only real surprise would be if Tebow snuck into the first round, but I don't see that happening.

Like the Cowboys really knew that Seattle would trade up for the pick in front of them and take Max Unger. They scouted the teams in front of them and expected Unger to be there. Seattle just scouted them. You can't win them all.

No you can't win them all, but you can do a hell of a lot better in your preparation and draft stratagy then what they pulled off last year. We've been real good in recent drafts but regressed last year.
With such a big staff, you cannot tell me they did not have discussions about trading down for future picks for a loaded draft the following year. I was mad about it last year, and nothing has changed now that we arrive here at the draft this year. 11 picks, all lower rounds, not much to show for them all - and now, when we should have extra picks, we're gonna be scrapping to select "impact" players in each round.
I love my Cowboys - but hate seeing N.E. and Philthy, Denver and San Fran. all with muliple picks in a draft that's loaded.
We seem, (to me at least) just out of range in each round - someone falls out of round 1, but would be gone long before we get to select in round 2, same for each round. While other teams can wheel and deal, take multiple players - we cannot.
OK - done venting now - back to our regularly schedueled program.

They'll whiff like they normally do.
Yeah, they've been in the playoffs almost every year for a decade by whiffing in the draft...

I think they are also interested in Demaryius Thomas but he falls under the "I'd rather get him at the top of the second" umbrella.

No, they were in the playoffs almost every year for a decade because of Donovan McNabb and Brian Westbrook, coupled with a pretty good defense.

Come on, you know I can't give the Eagles credit for anything! I can't stand everything about Philadelphia, but my hate runs deeper than Cowboys-Eagles - I watched my Army team get skunked 4 years in a row by Navy.

What if Desi Arnaz is available at 27?
It depends on who else is. If he is the best player on their board they will take him.

They need at least one, possibly two good CB's, a safety, an inside and outside backer and a DE. That's their 5 picks right there.

Id love to get Shipley. I think hes a quality player all around.

stupid article- he trashes dallas for trading down then praises the iggles and pats for stockpiling picks. guess how you stockpile picks genius... by trading down.:bang2:

You realize most of the Patriots top picks where injured or barely saw the field last year other than special teams. I had an entire post about it when people like you popped off about the Patriots and their draft picks and what they where doing. most did q whole lot of nothing but play special teams

Shipley in the 3rd? Wow.....
That has been the same story all off season. When you see things like "can help you instantly as a kick returner as he develops into an NFL-caliber wide receiver" that means you don't spend a high draft pick on him for two reasons: one - how long will that take and two - you don't know for certain that will happen.

I don't think this draft is half as deep as people are making it out to be. Outside of safety, I don't see a single position where a rookie would start. We have a deep and young team. If someone we like falls, let's take a shot.

We are 2-3 players away, not 6 or 7.
