DMN Blog: Gosselin: Cowboys won't be taking a WR in 1st round unless Dez Bryant falls

The Eagles fell apart when Jim Johnson died before last season. The defense was the heart of that team. McNabb did a good job of never throwing INT's.
Look back at the eagles last 6-7 drafts. They haven't been so great. They finally found 2 receivers in the draft after chasing so many receivers early in the draft over the years. They found some solid starters later in the rounds. But overall they havent been so special. There is a reason they will finish in the basement of the East this year.

The draft feels as much luck as anything. Look at our core of stars. Witten, Romo, Austin. 2 of them didnt even get drafted. Too many teams look at workout numbers and let players who have been productive go unnoticed. They are too focused on 40 times. i dont care what anyone's 40 time is. What was Emmitt's 40 time? Irvin's 40 time? I like production.

I don't think this draft is half as deep as people are making it out to be. Outside of safety, I don't see a single position where a rookie would start. We have a deep and young team. If someone we like falls, let's take a shot.

We are 2-3 players away, not 6 or 7.

I am in agreement and to be honest, I think that's sort of the point of stockpiling picks. It gives you more leverage. More picks = more chances to package something and move up and get someone you really need.

You realize most of the Patriots top picks where injured or barely saw the field last year other than special teams. I had an entire post about it when people like you popped off about the Patriots and their draft picks and what they where doing. most did q whole lot of nothing but play special teams

I think it was yourself or Hos that pointed out how badly the Patriots were doing with their top 3-4 round draft picks for the last 5 or so seasons. They were building through free agency more than they were through the draft.

Yeah, cause YOU do realise that although they have not drafted well lately, at least they put themselves in the position too. Not "popping off" sunshine, merely talking about OUR draft stratagy. Are you telling me that our 11 picks - outside our kicker, did more than play special teams ?
My point is, This year we seem to be hamstrung by LAST YEAR !

Then your point doesnt make any sense. We have all our original draft picks save 1 (5th). Almost every team in the league is in that same boat, so is every team in the league hamstrung because they didnt "stockpile" future picks?

Now if we were like the Commanders and always traded away our picks, getting little or nothing in return then you'd have a point.

I don't think this year is hampered by last year but Dallas could have improved this year by making a few less picks last year.

It depends on who else is. If he is the best player on their board they will take him.

Ain't nothing wrong with that. In the real world, it takes talent to win in the NFL no matter how good the organization is ran or what type of coaches you may have. More times then not, the most talented team wins.

You do realize that our draft strategy since Jimmy Johnson was the HC has always been trade down and stock pile DP. It is this same strategy that got us:
Tashard Choice, Orlando Scandrick, Felix Jones, Anthony Spencer, Nick Folk, Deon Anderson, Alan Ball, Jason Hatcher, Marcus Spears, Chris Canty, ect.

Enough with the facts already...

True, and I have no problem with that stratagy. My only point in this dabate is that, I think we could have done better last year by not taking so many picks last year and moving them forward to this year.
It's a mute point I know - like I said, just frustrates me. I see so much potential for a great draft this year.....

Well, you're certainly right that your point should be mute.

Everyone gets 1 pick per round, and we only have one round without a pick this year.

Just because we aren't wheeling and dealing and having 15 drafts picks each year doesn't mean we aren't improving the team.

Besides, be patient - you never know what could happen...trades could still happen.

And everyone expected last year's draft to suck, how?

Every year's upcoming draft will be the greatest until 3 years down the road when we look back and say, "Wow, 20XX was a horrible draft class for the entire NFL."

Every yr, everyone says "this is the greatest, deepest draft in years"

And just about every yr, thats wrong. This year is no different. This draft is not that much, if any better than last years. You even have Rick Gosselin saying it publicly, this isnt a deep draft. There's a couple of positions where its better or deeper, but overall its no different.

Don't buy that at all, for the Cowboys this draft is deep at positions of need/interest. DL, Safety, corner. OL drops off ,but still has players. I remember talking about this years draft - last year.
