The Cowboys open their new billion dollar palace in 2009 but the NFL did them no favors by scheduling the defending NFC East champion New York Giants for the home opener Sept. 20. The opponent will be tough enough for the Cowboys to overcome -- and recent NFL history may be even tougher.

Three of the last four NFL teams to open new stadiums christened them with a loss: Indianapolis in 2008, Philadelphia in 2003 and Detroit in 2002. The 10 teams that have introduced new stadiums in the 2000 decade stand a humble 5-5 in home openers.

Overall, the 32 NFL teams are 19-13 in the debut games of their current stadiums. The Cowboys were one of the winners, defeating the New England Patriots in the Texas Stadium opener in 1971.

But the Giants owe the Cowboys one -- Dallas toppled New York, 24-14, in the first game in the Meadowlands in 1976.

I'm glad a division rival like the Giants will be the 1st team to play Dallas in the new stadium. I expect it to be a tough game and as a fan of football those are the best kind of games to have. Best way to describe it would be as a Longhorns fan I don't get excited about playing Texas El Paso as I do when Texas faces off with Oklahoma. Tough games is what makes football the great and entertaining sport it is.

I thought this article was going to be about how quiet it was at the old stadium and that with the new stadium we might have more of a home field advantage.
My friend that is a Giant fan thinks it is disadvantage to have to play the Cowboys at home so early.

While I obviously care about winning the first home game of the season, I couldn't care less about the "significance" of winning the first game in the new stadium. It's no more important than the home-opener in any other season, in my book.

articles like this are meaningless. It has no bearing on what will happen with NY comes in town to lose to our Dallas Cowboys THIS year

fwiw...I've felt more comfortable on the road in recent years. I know the record proves otherwise, but there is so much more pressure on the boys to perform at home, especially in front of a crowd that turns so fast.

Your friend is correct.

Dallas traditionally plays very well at home and early in the season especially. Its a huge disadvantage for Dallas to play on the East Coast late in the year.

Late season games in Dallas are basically "perfect" football weather and are of no advantage to anyone. The chill in the air takes a bit of bite of out of the Dallas fans and the girls certainly dress less showy. It really is just less fun then earlier in the year. There are more tickets being scalped and thus more road team fans in the stands.

Is it just me or do you get the feeling he so badly wants us to lose our first game in the new stadium. And every other onw we play their.

Have to love these local Dallas writers. They take anti-homer to a whole new level.

I really wish a few would relocate to Philly and start covering the eagles.
