How diuretic suspensions hurt the Cowboys

Yes, that headline is crazy. But today's news that six players, including three New Orleans Saints, were suspended for using a diuretic, which could be a masking agent for steroids, does indeed have a back-handed way of hurting the Cowboys.
According to the report, New Orleans will lose running back Deuce McAllister and defensive linemen Charles Grant and Will Smith for the rest of the regular season. If the Saints, or the other teams for that matter, make the playoffs, the players could be eligible to return to the active roster on Dec. 29.
OK, now how does this hurt the Cowboys? The Saints are 6-6, so what's the big deal, right? Well, the Saints face Atlanta this week. The Falcons are currently just ahead of the Cowboys in the playoff race. New Orleans then gets Chicago and Detroit and closes the regular season against Carolina, another team ahead of the Cowboys in the playoff race.
What's a real crusher is that the Saints have the Falcons and Panthers in New Orleans. If you're a Cowboys fan, you need the Saints to win every game possible down the stretch.
Granted, it's asking a lot to think that the Saints-Panthers game in Week 17 will affect the Cowboys playoff positioning. But for those looking for any little speed bump in the road, that could be one right after Christmas.
