DMN Blog: How rare is this no-sack streak for Wade Phillips?

From a team that lead the league in sacks last year to a team that has gone 2 straight games without a sack.


If you ask me this falls on the players shoulders and not so much Wade...

well i think its both, dallas domination; do you remember what wade said after the tampa offense ran on our defense, due to the blitz packages that wade ran in first half;
Oh, its probably my fault, i didnt run the blitzes, dogs etc enough because i didnt want to get players hurt, when you blitz, you tend to get offensive players hurt, etc.

that to me means he didnt do his job;
another way to look at it dallasdomination, after wade spent extra time on the run defense after tampa bay ran on us left and right, what happened agasinst the giants, we shut down their vaunted running attack, but due to wade having to catch the run defense up, he left out the pass defense

so why didnt wade do that in preseason dallasdomination? If the offense coordinator has had his team scoring 30 plus points in the last 2 games and the special teams coach has had his team improving on special teams, why isnt wade doing his job, isnt wade suppose to be a defensive guru?

true its on the players too, but its also on the scheme by the defensive coordinator who is wade right?

Eli's a good QB, the Giants have a good OL, and we're putting a lot of pressure on the secondary by playing too much man. We'll mix our coverages more and the three guys we've got at QB will be better.

Our safeties, especially Hamlin, didn't help us much on Sun. That's surprised me more than the CB play.

Right there you hit the nail on the head Idgit; wade didnt account into the giants good offensive line and eli being a smart qb etc, so he didnt prepare the defense right; he underestimated the giants on offense, thats on him

the players take on the personality of the head coach
in some ways looks like to me the dallas cowboys defenders are taking on the personality of wade in that pass rush, sacks, interceptions, everything is fine; maybe that is why hamlin looked lousy when he ran right by a rb on a blitz, oh never mind everything will be ok or newman, oh, i missed covering the player, never mind wade says everything is ok, so no big deal;

I was being sarcastic, because the idea that only sacks matter and not hurries or hits on the QB is absolute malarky.

It's been surprising how leaky the secondary has been. Most of us, or at least I, overrated this secondary.

You could not have overrated the secondary more than Slate. He said it would be the BEST in the NFL.

And if the QB is throwing completions at will after 3 step drops, then the blame is on the secondary. If the secondary is not tackling WRs after they catch the pass, the blame is on the secondary. If the secondary is out of position on blitzes, and a hot is completed on them, then the blame is on the secondary. If the secondary is not looking for the ball and turn into the WR, then the blame is on the secondary.

The secondary was horrendous against the Giants, but hopefully that was an aberration, like the brain freeze the ILBs had against the Bucs.

If we don't get a sack in 6+ games, I'll be CONVINCED that something is wrong with D-Ware.

Heck, If he doesn't get a sack THIS WEEK, I'll be REALLY leaning towards something being wrong with him.

The problem we have is that nobody other than D-Ware and Rat consistently get pressure. You block those two guys and the opposing QB thinks he is playing Madden. Now it doesnt help that our CBs suck so bad that they cant cover anybody for more than 3 seconds, I will grant that.

So how do we fix it???


Wade basically has until the bye week to figure that out. If Jerry is going to make a coaching move, it will be during the bye week. I personally think Wade plays out this year and then gets fired, but if we enter the bye week with the 30th ranked defense in the league all bets are off.

We do it every year. We always think we are going to have our best secondary since the Deion Sanders and Kevin Smith years in the mid 1990's. It hasn't happened yet and It doesn't look good for this year either.
