Dr. Wade Phillips didn't have Sam Hurd update

You would think Sam Hurd's MRI results would rank pretty high on the Valley Ranch priority list today.

However, Wade Phillips said he didn't have an update on Hurd yet. Phillips thought the MRI results were in, but he claimed to not have seen them.

Whatever.

You're fooling yourself if you think Hurd, who suffered a high ankle sprain last night, can play the season opener in Cleveland.

Phillips did offer one medical update: LB/blogger Kevin Burnett (knee) will practice Wednesday.

Cowboys PR chief Rich Dalrymple just poked his head into the media room and informed us that Sam Hurd (high ankle sprain) will not play in the season opener. He did not have any further information on when Hurd might return.

Wade Phillips is not available for comment.

Good news on Burnett. I was hoping Carpenter would show me more during his absence, but I think it's clear that Burnett is our best option backing up the inside. Sadly...I thought our depth was better than it actually is.

Carp didn't "Stand out" but he was better than Burnett (in the short time she was actually able to play before getting hurt... again).

Wade sounded like crap today. He either did not sleep, has a cold or was up crying all night.

He sounded exhausted. And he was extremely reluctant to say anything about hurd. That has to be a bad sign.

He screwed up playing Hurd and he knows it.

Anyonr that really believes Carpenter is better than Burnett either does not understand football or is not watching.

Three weeks ago I would have agreed with you, but Carpenter's stats don't support what I watched out there...which was a very timid linebacker. He's got the athleticism to play, he just doesn't seem to use it. He can make tackles...but they're typically after he's been pushed back two yards...and while Burnett isn't much different, I think he's more aggressive.

Either way, I think ILB is a position we need to aggressively address next year. Neither one of these guys is a future starter IMO.

At least we get one back in Burnett. And Newman is already back, too.

Just Austin, Hurd, Stanback, Spencer and Kosier left to go.

Sigh.

I'm surprised by the Carpenter-is-better-than-Burnett talk too. I don't think Burnett has much starting potential, but he's carved a real nice niche as a passing-downs inside linebacker. I've always thought he's a pretty good asset in those situations. It's a shame he's not developing into an every-down guy certainly, but he does play a valuable role.

I'm still waiting for Carpenter to develop into a defensive role player, much less a potential starter.

No big surprise:

Hurd ruled out of opener

Cowboys wide receiver Sam Hurd has been ruled out for the season opener at Cleveland with a high left ankle sprain. No further timetable was given on his status. Cowboys are now left with two healthy receivers with NFL experience in Terrell Owens and Patrick Crayton.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said after the game Thursday night that he doesn't plan on signing a new receiver after the NFL cuts on Saturday.

Not report on Hurd yet

Cowboys coach Wade Phillips just had a brief press conference but didn't have any news on injured wideout Sam Hurd's sprained left ankle. Hurd has had an MRI, but we are waiting for a possible update on his condition.

Wade also said there is a possibility Isaiah Stanback (shoulder injury) could play in the season opener....Also, LB Kevin Burnett is expected to return to practice Wednesday and play against Cleveland. He is coming off minor knee surgery.

1. Yeah, cuz it's "Dumb" to play your BACKUPS in a preseason game. Who the hell was he suppose to play? The STARTERS are the ones you sit, the backups play. Wade didn't do anything wrong by playing Hurd.

2. Anyone that thinks Burnett (in his limited playing time due to being a brittle little (Blank)) played better than Carpenter OBVIOUSLY knows nothing about football. I haven't claimed Carp played good or great, but anyone with two working eyeballs saw that he outplayed Burnett (in that ONE game).
