It's Marc Colombo's job when he's ready

On Monday, right tackle Marc Colombo began on-field drills for his rehab from ankle surgery that has kept him out since the first half of the Green Bay game. His eye is on a return to the wild-card round of the playoffs but he didn't want to rule out a come back for the regular-season finale vs. Philadelphia.

Coach Wade Phillips didn't want to rule Colombo out of the Eagles' game either. And there's no dilemma at what to do at right tackle - when Colombo is ready, he starts over Doug Free, who has done a nice job in his first extended action.

"He graded out the best of our offensive linemen in the last game," Phillips said. "Pretty important game I thought. Some people thought it was."

The blessing in disguise is that Free has gained valuable experience. With a healthy Colombo coming back, we are stronger and deeper on the O-line now.

with the experience that Free has gained, listening to Jerry on his show on Tuesday Free may end up playing the LT, position next season. FlO may be out the door.

It has been noted/said that Free is a better pass blocker than he is a run blocker, which is something he has to work on in the offseason, technique, leg strength etc.

Free even admitted that he prefers pass blocking to run blocking. I am always refering back to when Parcells signed Colombo, he got him because flo was in a contract season and they did not know if they would be able to retain Flo, so Colombo was brought in to fill the LT spot, but we were able to resign Flo and the RT job was open for someone to take it and Colombo, stepped up and took the job.

I like Flo but he has finally gotten to the point with me that I would rather take a chance with a rotation of LTs until someone secure the spot.

Right now we have the young guy Free wh can do the job, with a full offseason and Training camp under hsi belt, plus the experience he is getting and will get the rest of this season and in the playoffs.

He has quicker feet than Flo, and with added strength he should be able to deal with the speed rushers that usually line up on the left side.

I know i am forgetting about the young man that got hurt during the training camp, I know he will be in the mix too this offseason.

Jerry I'm sure has went to the coaches about letting the young guys play, so that they can get the experience they need when it is time for them to step up and play, Jerry basically said as much when he went into his rave about how well Free has played.

BHendri, Flo wasn't in a contract year when we signed Colombo, who was always going to be only a right tackle. You are thinking of Leonard Davis, though I don't think they ever intended to really use him as a LT.

Even though I really like what I have seen from Free so far, the job should be Colombo's WHEN he is healthy enuff. This has been a great opportunity though for Free AND the coaching staff with regards to judging his ability in live fire.

yep, don't look now, but we may have just developed an offensive lineman. Free's played extremely well given the circumstances.

No, when Colombo came to the Cowboys it was the season before Flo was to become a FA, Parcells plan was to puthim at LT, incase they were outbidded for Flo' services, so when Flo resigned with us they moved him to RT. Davis was not even thought of at the time.

Flozell signed contracts in 2003 and 2008. We brought Colombo in during the 2005 season and he became the starter in 2006 at right tackle.

You're thinking of Leonard Davis, who was signed during the 2007 offseason. During the 2008 offseason when we were negotiating a new contract with Flozell, Jerry mentioned Leonard could play LT if needed, but we never had the intent to put him there.

Man, extreme statements like these drive me nuts. I've read just the opposite as well (not just about Free, but others too).

What is the truth?

Does he really suck?

That seems extremely harsh and I would think we would have seen some serious & obvious effect on our offense if he truly sucked

I don't know one way of another, but I would like to know what you have seen and what analysis you have done to conclude that Free sucks.

If Free is playing well, go with Free. At this point, Don't know what you can expect with Columbo and rust and strength. He's been out 7 weeks.

I remember a time in the past when Wade said Cory Procter graded out the best in a game. It made me wonder what that really means.

No, I'm not thinking of Lenard Davis, I remember reading that about Colombo and the LT spot, Flo also suffered a knee inury that season. I'll find the article that I got that from. sooner or later. I know what I read.

I think it's almost a foregone conclusion that Free will be our LT next season.

[Free has done pretty well at the easier postion of RT. Expecting him to do LT as well is a big reach.

Yeah I remember wade last year saying proctor was our best lineman one game. That was the final straw for me as far as believing ANYTHING he said about ANY player.
