Jerry Jones' concerns

Here's what Jerry Jones said when asked what his concerns were as GM:

-- ``I really hope we don't get a chance to see where our depth is this year in the offensive line. But I think that that is an area that ... I'd like to have a better feel for. I'd like to see Free have more snaps, especially there at left tackle. That's something to think about, without in any way diminishing Flo's contribution right now and hopefully the next year or two.

-- ``I think that candidly we need to be making plays at safety. I think that's an area I'd like to see us get some plays, and we by the way thought that when we were putting this team together this spring. Sensabaugh's injury didn't help us there, but he's back now, and Mike Hamlin is coming back so maybe there's some help on the way.''

-- Ken Hamlin, we know what he is -- he's our quarterback back there, but there's an area, I like where we are at corner, I like where we are, I really like where we are with our outside linebackers, and a lot of clubs are envious of us with what we've got with our front, our down linemen on defense.

It's gotten to the point where the majority of people on this board don't buy Jerry's ******** anymore. The guy is always too optimistic and never admits when he makes a wrong decision...like trading for Roy.

I like it much better when I don't hear anything from Jerry.

You know it's getting to that point with me.

There just isn't any credibility there.

Season after season of underwhelming performances tends to make one jaded I guess.

Here's what an Owner should worry about...
(not in order)

Did they sell out the stadium?

Is merchandise selling?

Are we making money in general?

Did we win?

Leave the personnel stuff to people who actually know what they are doing.

Sounds like even the ultra optimistic Jerry Jones can see what a liability Ken Hamlin has become. Even w/Jerry, always wait for the "but".

The very first line was: "Here's what Jerry Jones said when asked what his concerns were as GM."

Also, I don't understand the complaints here. Jerry said that our OL depth sucks, our safeties suck, and our DL, OLBs and CBs are pretty good. Is any of this controversial or indicative of unfounded optimism?

The thing I like least about hearing things from Jerry is that Jerry shouldn't be saying them...the head coach should be.

Oh wait....Jerry IS the head coach.

:eek::

Good point, I didn't see that. I will just remind you that the only reason he gets to call himself "GM" is because he is the Owner.

Another good point. He is is saying what a lot of us feel. Safety play is horrible. Offensive line depth is suspect. I wonder who's responsible for getting us better safeties and offensive line depth?? Oh yeah...

I can see teams being envious of Ratliff. Maybe even Spears or Olshansky.

But our depth is average. I have a hard time seeing what he is talking about here.

Sure, but that's true of every GM. You can direct the same criticisms at the GM of every team, except the perfect teams (and the brand new GMs, I suppose). I'm actually a bit heartened that he recognizes the problems.

He could have said this about the offensive line for the past three or four years (going all the way back to the Petitti glory days). It is hardly heartening that it was only this year he started mentioning that it was a concern and this was only after our backup linemen looked questionable in preseason.

He's spent more time and energy addressing special teams, the secondary, tight ends and linebackers in recent drafts than he has the line. So if this is only concerning him now, he'd better pray for health of all five starters because we have no one dependable to step in.

Two years ago, after the debacle that was the playoff loss to the Midgets in Texas Stadium, I suggested one of THE main reasons for that loss was that the Cowboys' O-line was gassed. They had three drives of over 12 plays each and when it came to the last few minutes, they were all gasping for air looking like fish out of water. One of the remedies for that was to create at least a system throught the season where tackles and guards can rotate on at least 1 series, if possible 2 series, per half. That would keep the starters more fresh while giving valuable playing time and experience to the back ups, so if an injury happened, the change wouldn't be as dramatic.

But I guess that's too " outside the box thinking " for the Cowboys.
