During an appearance on San Antonio's WOAI-AM 1200, Jerry Jones addressed the brouhaha he created by saying he was surprised that Marion Barber didn't play against the Steelers.

"We all know how tough Marion Barber is," Jerry said. "When he had his injury, I felt, 'Look, you'll have to shoot him to keep him off the football field.' I was surprised that we didn't have him. That was not meant to be critical of his toughness. It did come out that way, but fundamentally, it was because he is so tough that you would have thought that he could play."

In other words, Jerry stuck his foot in his mouth when talking about the Barbarian's pinkie toe.

We can move on now. Nothing more to see here.

I had a pretty good feeling that this was nothing but ESPN trying to make a story out of nothing....yet again.

What he said was stupid and didn't come out right, but I really doubt Jerry was actually questioning his toughness.

Does anyone have the exact quote that Jerry said originally? I feel like I've seen a few different things.

Jerry Jones 'surprised' Marion Barber didn't play

Jerry Jones believed until the team boarded the plane without Marion Barber that his $45 million running back would play against the Steelers.

"He surprised me that he's not here playing," Jerry said in the locker room. "That surprises me."

Was the injury, a dislocated right pinkie toe, worse than originally diagnosed?

"No, it is not," Jerry said. "It is not. He can play with that injured toe. He can play with the soreness, combination of those things. I see nothing that would have led us to believe that he couldn't."

Tashard Choice said he knew after a Monday conversation with Barber that he'd start against the Steelers. That information apparently didn't get passed on to the owner until minutes before the team took off for Pittsburgh.

Fidty bucks says it won't be enough for some, they'll still be here saying he "called Barber out" and that he "threw him under the bus".

I just don't get two things about this.
How does the GM of the team not know if he's going to play or not?
How does the GM not know the extent of the injury?

Especially if said GM is Jerry Jones.

He said Barber's toe wasn't bad enough to keep him from playing and he was surprised that Barber didn't play.

He never questioned Barber's toughness or said anything like it. But to the media who didn't know Barber was held out of the game because of his CALF, not his TOE, it sounded like Jones was questioning Barber's toughness.

MB3 toughness has been questioned and the media ran with it. I bet he runs with a HUGE chip on his shoulder against the Giants. This could really turn out to be a good thing.. Just sayin!!!:D

Thank you very much.

To me, the quote reads like Jones is defending the team against claims of playing games with the injury report, especially in light of the information about Choice knowing that he would start.

If they were playing games with the injury report, Jerry would make a terrible poker player.

What is just as amazing as how sports writers sensationalize things, though, is the ease with which some fans dismiss things.

Ok, Jerry says he didn't mean to question Barber's "toughness". A few thoughts.

1. What did you THINK Jerry would say? "Yes, I actually did mean to question his toughness." cmon.

2. Whether you question his toughness or not did you not question why he wasn't there and available? If you are surprised he isn't there, and you say you didn't see a reason he couldn't play, then however you want to word it, aren't you saying that the player could have played but didn't? If a player could have played, but didn't, and you are surprised by it, then no matter what you call it you are questioning the decision, are you not?

I am in full agreement that this just needs to go away, and that we should all move on, but you can't give Jerry a pass on this. What he said was dumb.

I still think Barber is a wuss and a HUGE piece of garbage. Witten plays with multiple injuries, Ware played with injuries, romo played with broken pinkie... I mean most of this team is playing hurt and then this so called "Tough" player hurts a freaking pinkie toe, his tests say he can go training staff says he can go coaches say he can go owner says he can go and the overpaid/overated loser pulls himself... What a loser.

What in the hell? Ware didn't play with a dislocated pinkie and Romo sat out 3 weeks with that broken pinkie. Telling Barber to play with a dislocated pinkie is like telling a pitcher to play with a broken hand. Barber relies on that toe and he would've sucked in the Steelers game and we'd be crying we shouldn't have played him and given Choice more carries.

The whole Barber missing thing was dumb from the beginning, in terms of commenting on it.

Choice had more yards rushing against Pittsburgh than any back this year, and had enough receiving yardage that he was over 150 yards in total production. That game was not lost because Barber was missing. That game was lost because of turnovers.

Well i'll say this. I think we needed Barber to close that quarter out. Having another back out there would've done wonders for us when we were trying to run the clock out. That being said, we didn't have one.
