We probably ought to familiarize ourselves with what's out there, just in case. Here are rankings of the free agents at each position.

The Ray Lewis-to-Valley Ranch rumor has been out there for a couple weeks. If the Cowboys do make a big splash, Lewis might be it. He would fill huge needs at inside linebacker (assuming Zach Thomas isn't returning) and leader, but how much do you want to pay a 34-year-old at that position?

As far as smaller splashes go, signing a backup quarterback would make sense. That was a problem position, to put it mildly, last season, and the QB draft crop is considered weak. The Cowboys had internal discussions about trading for Chris Simms last year. He'll be on the market and ought to come at a reasonable price, and there are several other available backups that would be significant upgrades over 40-year-old Brad Johnson.

Assuming that the Cowboys can't afford to keep Chris Canty, they might try to replace him via free agency. San Diego's Igor Olshansky could be a slightly cheaper option who has experience in Wade Phillips' scheme.

Out of this group there are several more intriguing prospects than Simms. Just like Avery said, Im confused why so many keep bringing his name into the fold when there are several others like Fitz and O'Sullivan that have actual playing time at this level.

Luke McCown is a guy that Gosselin was touting as a good backup QB for us. Fitzpatrick from Cincinnati is good although he might want to be a starter somewhere, According to that list Simms is a UFA.

Jerry resisting the urge to overpay someone will be the first sign, to me, that things are really changing.

Simms was promising for the Bucs til he injured his spleen but he has done nothing since.

If you bring him here he can be the 3 but not as the backup. Not until he proves he can actually play.

I do like him more than Bollinger for whatever that is worth.

I think you need a backup QB. You can still keep Brooks, if you want, but I would still like to add someone else for security. Luke McCown would be one of my favorite options, and I think Garrett probably knows him a little from TB, right? Other options would be Charlie Frye, David Carr, Patrick Ramsey, or even JT O'Sullivan.

I think you have to buy a DE. You're either going to spend to keep Canty, or you will want someone to come in and fill the hole he leaves. Olshansky gets mentioned a lot for good reason. Shaun Cody might be able to play that positon after being a bust in Detroit. Dwan Edwards might be interesting, but he's coming off an injury, I believe. CJ Mosely has some 3-4 experience. Antonio Smith might be a nice target. I would even keep an eye on Ronald Fields or Rockey Bernard.

I think you'll need a LB too. Maybe even a couple of them. I'm interested to see what happens with Greg Ellis. But I think you could look at Angelo Crowell, if his knees check out. Donnie Edwards might be done in KC. Andra Davis is done in Cleveland, I think. Nate Webster has some versatility when healthy. Takeo Spikes will be available. Even Mike Peterson might be an option. Those are some lesser options just in case Bobby Carpenter can't do the job. I think guys like Marques Harris, Shantee Orr, Daryl Blackstock, or Roderick Green might be some guys to bring in as the third or fourth OLB.


But I wouldn't blame Jerry for being a little more reserved in free agency. I think a lot of the pieces are already in place. I think you can really utilize the draft to effectively fill a lot of the holes too.

I really don't understand the Ray Lewis connection to the Cowboys. Ray Lewis would be a GREAT fit in Big D, but we would have to RELEASE or TRADE Bradie James because THEY BOTH PLAY THE SAME POSITIONS AT ILB IN A 3-4. Bottom line is, you just signed Bradie James to an extension a little over a year ago and he's not going anywhere. FORGET Ray

I hate to say this, but I think this guy underrated Garcia. He started most of the games for Tampa and did pretty well. As a backup, he would translate well to Romos game plan. This guy doesn't think anyone will want him as a backup. I think he would be a good fit. If it smells like a rat.....

I think whnat happens to those guys determines, to a large extent, what the Cowboys do.
