Jerry says don't sweat Romo contract situation
In case you've been hiding under a rock, I'll begin this post by informing you that Tony Romo is really, really good and in the last year of his contract.
Marc Bulger's six-year, $65 million deal must look like a major bargain to Jerry at this point. All Romo has done during the Cowboys' 4-0 start is pass for 1,199 yards and 11 touchdowns, rush for two more scores and make countless did-you-see-that?! kind of plays.
Oh, and he has Hispanic heritage, too. Jerry himself has pointed out how big a bonus that is to the Cowboys' marketing department.
Cha-ching!!
"I've never seen so many people so worried about the money," Jerry said when reporters grilled him after the game about Romo's contract negotations. "Do people need money to play this game?"
That joke was Jerry's attempt to brush off the subject. As you might expect, it was unsuccessful. Jerry actually worked up a sweat answering questions about Romo's contract.
Romo has the centerpiece photo on the cup the Cowboys handed out to fans today promoting Hispanic Heritage Month. And Jerry assured reporters (again) that Romo would be the franchise centerpiece for a long, long time.
"We know his value, and we're seeing his value to us winning," Jerry said. "We want him to be the long-term Cowboy quarterback, and he wants to be the long-term Cowboy quarterback. With those dynamics, there ought to be something worked out in there someplace, but there’s no timetable."
Jerry also mentioned that, because of the way the league is structured, we don't have to worry about Romo not being around. In other words, the Cowboys are prepared to use the franchise tag on him.
That's just Jerry trying to cling to what little leverage he has in the negotiations. Romo's star keeps rising, and the Cowboys have plenty of room under the salary cap.
It might not happen until after the season, but Romo will sign the richest deal in Cowboy history soon enough.
