Jimmy: Credit to Wade the head coach, not just coordinator

Jimmy Johnson, in his role of analyst with FOX Sunday, said Cowboys coach Wade Phillips has worked wonders with the defense, but the credit should not stop there.

``We have to give Wade a lot of the credit for the improvement of the defense in the last couple years,'' said Johnson, who directed the Cowboys to two Super Bowl victories in the 1990s. ``But he's the head coach. He deserves credit for this team winning against Philadelphia, winning the NFC East, winning in the first round. Wade deserves credit as the head coach, not just the defensive coordinator.''

Favre says Tony Romo has been exceptional in big games

Brett Favre and Tony Romo will text occasionally. The Minnesota quarterback sent one recently complimenting Romo on how well he played down the stretch.

"I always had a lot of confidence in him,'' Favre said. "There are so many factors that go into winning and losing, whether it be January or September. He, to me, has faced as much pressure as he will ever face.

"For him to really step up, it's not like had to play easy games down the stretch. He had to play some tough games, had to face the scrutiny of not being able to win those games.

"I think he's done an exceptional job of handling that and playing at a high level. He has nothing to prove.''

No doubt about it.

Many along with myself would have just thought wade did a good job coaching and steering parcells team had they done this in 07.

But this season must make it even more gratifying to wade and this staff. This is their team, they assembled this one.

Obvisously not all of it, but its a wade phillips team. These guys picked the guys they wanted, like butler and williams....and john phillps connection to virginia to have the knowledge about phillips and ogletree.

This group won a playoff game with their guys. Its wades team. He should be given all the credit, along with the rest of the staff and front office obviously.

But there is no doubt whos team this is.

The Wade Phillips discussion is over. I was a doubter. I wanted him gone. But I will admit I was wrong. Wade deserves all the credit he is getting. He deserves an extension to his contract, no matter what happens on Sunday.

Football is a results oriented business and Wade has provided results that no coach since Barry Switzer provided: a playoff win.

Hopefully we get another one on Sunday.

Tend to disagree, theebs. ALL of this team is Wades. He may have inherited some physical bodies but the attitude and level he's brought these guys up to - as a team - is 90% of a great football team. This is ALL Wades team, IMO.

Doubting is one thing not giving a coach any coach a fair shake is a bit different (not accusing you) calling a coach nothing but a puppet as some have I felt was a sign of total disrespect. Wade deserved better than that as would any HC who may get hired in the future.

This business of who should get credit/blame is such a slippery slope.

Certainly it is now proven that Wade as HC can win in the playoffs. What is done because of versus in-spite of is a never-ending debate though.

We are seeing the fruits of the type of environment he has created for this team as a HC.

Family/team concept, accountability, respect, hard work, trust, focus, confidence but not arrogance.

I see these qualities among all players not just defensive players. I see players pulling for each other and by all accounts they seem to really like each other. Thats on the HC.

To be fair, what we're seeing right now is the culmination of something that started with the Parcells hire. Parcells came in and professionalized the whole organization, particularly talent evaluation and the draft. He also switched us to the 3-4, which is only really a big deal in that it made Wade a viable choice as his successor. With that groundwork laid, Wade came into a situation that was set up for success, and he's done very well by it - he's found the right pieces to complete his defense (and now that those pieces are all working together, wow), he's (I believe) helped Garrett grow into his role, he's helped create a drama-free clubhouse (which includes managing the Roy Williams problem, no small feat). After the years in the wilderness, it's been a nice ride. My biggest concern is whether we'll see backsliding in the talent evaluation/drafting department in the next few years toward Jerry and his cronies.

I think BP was a big helpt but there are 11 different starters on this team who were not with us in 06 BP last year. It is not as if BP handed a championship team off to Wade, we still had many holes to fill after BP left.

How can you say that when the '07 and '08 drafts were so much better than the '06 one?

Not that I'm trying to get into a Parcells debate... I'm so tired of those. But I think Tom Ciskowski has shown he can hold his own.

BTW, all this Wade love makes me very uncomfortable. ;)

I want Tony to face one more pressure a few times. The pressure of Super Bowls. I'm sure he will handle them just fine to.

As for the Parcells vs. Wade debate, I still don't think Parcells gets enough credit for pulling us out of the doldrums the way he did. As someone said, he "professionalized" what was a bottom-five organization he took over.

For that, there will forever be some Tuna-smelling imprints on this team. From getting Austin because of the Jersey connections, to Romo because of the Payton/Eastern Illinois connection, to simply turning a 5-11 team into something other than a 5-11 team, this team will forever have a little Parcells to it.

But that's the way with any organization that has a coaching change. Tomlin's team has some Cowher to it, Caldwell's team has some Dungy to it, Shanahan's team will still have some Gibbs to it.

With that said, none of that undermines the job Wade has done this season. He has taken another man's team and unquestionably molded it into his own. Sure, some of Parcells' pieces remain intact, but it's the Parcells pieces that don't remain intact that says the most. From turning a vanilla 3-4 defense into one of the league's most feared, to finding "his" pass rusher opposite Ware, to solidifying the secondary ... this team is Wade all the way.

Yeah, I think the post-Parcells Jerry has proven we're not going to slide back into those late-90s draft tendencies anytime soon. I undoubtedly had this fear immediately following Parcells' retirement, but the 2007 and 2008 drafts alleviated my worries. The 2009 draft seems sketchy, but even it has a lot more promise than Jerry's hallmark drafts from 1995-2001.

On a side-but-related note, I do hope last season's alleged "cost-cutting" draft is an isolated occurrence.
