Wade Phillips remembers the first day he saw defensive end Marcus Dixon in camp last season.

"He couldn't run a complete lap without having to stop he was so out of shape,'' the Cowboys coach said. "I thought this guy had no chance to make this team or play NFL football.

"He's gone from there to being in as good a shape as anyone we have.''

Dixon's potential landed him a spot on the practice squad last season. He still weighs 285, but has packed more strength on that frame: his bench press has jumped from 335 to 405 pounds and he squatted 555 pounds on three reps.

Dixon is part of every special teams group in this camp and has impressed coach Joe DeCamillis with his speed and savvy. He has a chance to contribute.

"I love it,'' Dixon said. "It's an opportunity to get on the field. I think I can move into the defense as well, but special teams is definitely a go-getter for me.''

I strongly disagree with the coaches especially Coach Joe. Snap judgements are clearly the best way to evaluate a football player. This is the only way we can field a team of all pros at every position.

I still think he makes the final 53 somehow.

Marcus Dixon sounds like a keeper.

If we go long on DEs while already carrying 3 QBs and 2 Ks, where will we get the spot from?

Isn't Dixon the one who had the girl problem in college? If so, sad story, I remember watching it.

I'm rooting for the guy, just for that alone.

285 seems a little small to be a DLmen in a 3-4.

No FB, if we go more with 2 TE sets, and the 3 RB's we have.

Any news on the FB position anyway.

Also we keep 5 WR, not 6, based on potential like the previous years.

Or maybe he just wins a position outright, and we don't go long on DE's.

If he makes it on ST's play, then a S or CB may be dropped, like Ball or Brown or one of the rookies, or even Watkins.
