Marcus Spears has new representatives.
The restricted free agent has signed on with Bill Johnson and Pat Dye of ProFiles Sports Inc. out of Atlanta. He cut ties with Steve Feldman shortly before free agency began on March 5.
The Cowboys put the original tender on Spears, which would pay him $1.226 million in 2010 and require a team to fork over a first-round pick as compensation if they signed him. Unless a separate trade could be worked out, which is always a possibility for a restricted free agent.
To me, Spears is a little underappreciated by the fandom solely because of where he was picked in the 2005 draft. He actually has similar career numbers with Chris Canty, who played a lot more on third downs in his time with the Cowboys than Spears.
Here's how they stacked up in their first four years as Cowboys, according to stats on the NFL's Web site:
Spears - 64 games, 141 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 8 pass deflections, 3 forced fumbles
Canty - 64 games, 148 tackles, 10 sacks, 8 pass deflections, 1 forced fumble
But Canty was able to hit the free-agent market in 2009 and cashed in with the New York Giants but injuries ruined his first year in New York.
Anyway, back to Johnson and Dye. They also represent DeMarcus Ware and Keith Brooking. They have had a good relationship with the Cowboys over the years and Ware signed a deal with $41 million guaranteed last year. I'm not saying Spears gets an extension anywhere close to that, but it's something to keep in mind.
