Marcus Spears has new representatives.

The restricted free agent has signed on with Bill Johnson and Pat Dye of ProFiles Sports Inc. out of Atlanta. He cut ties with Steve Feldman shortly before free agency began on March 5.

The Cowboys put the original tender on Spears, which would pay him $1.226 million in 2010 and require a team to fork over a first-round pick as compensation if they signed him. Unless a separate trade could be worked out, which is always a possibility for a restricted free agent.

To me, Spears is a little underappreciated by the fandom solely because of where he was picked in the 2005 draft. He actually has similar career numbers with Chris Canty, who played a lot more on third downs in his time with the Cowboys than Spears.

Here's how they stacked up in their first four years as Cowboys, according to stats on the NFL's Web site:

Spears - 64 games, 141 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 8 pass deflections, 3 forced fumbles
Canty - 64 games, 148 tackles, 10 sacks, 8 pass deflections, 1 forced fumble

But Canty was able to hit the free-agent market in 2009 and cashed in with the New York Giants but injuries ruined his first year in New York.

Anyway, back to Johnson and Dye. They also represent DeMarcus Ware and Keith Brooking. They have had a good relationship with the Cowboys over the years and Ware signed a deal with $41 million guaranteed last year. I'm not saying Spears gets an extension anywhere close to that, but it's something to keep in mind.

We like Marcus Spears but we don't love Marcus Spears.

We'll gladly take him back but we'll glady trade him as well.

Either way Hatch and Bowen are going to cut into his snaps next year.

He's going to want Canty money but he won't get it in Dallas. I'd rather they lower the compensation for him and trade him for a pick in a very deep draft this year. I'd take a 2nd or 3rd for him and go with Hatcher, Bowen, Dixon, and draft someone in rounds 3-5 to compete there also.

Quality 3-4 DE that play the run are not premium players, so Dallas is playing this right. I believe they will resign Spears if he is reasonable in his demands.

they aren't premium players ... but they are necessary for our D - I don't think the tender we gave him really speaks to whether we like him or not... it just says "wow, look at this weird quirk in the CBA that allows us to put a 1st round tender on a guy and actually pay less than a 2nd round tender"

It is obvious the Boys think Hatcher and Bowen are more than capable replacements, so Spears must sign a reasonable extension or he will be gone next year.

Otherwise they would not have risked alienating Spears with a lower tender.

The Giants way overpaid for Canty. He's a nice player, but nothing special. They paid him like a difference maker. Now they're stuck with him for a while.

Dallas hasn't made that mistake with Spears. Yet.

No way I'd pay Spears, unless it was a contract for less than Olshansky got.

Poor analysis.

We tendered Spears at a level that ensures he isn't going anywhere. Only a ******* would tender someone more.

Or as Jerry noted "Our motivation in how we did our free agency was strictly relative to what we thought we could handle as a club [rather than] anything to create any incentive or disincentive."

Spears sure seems alienated by this. In addition to noting "That's the way it is, man, it's business." He also went out and hired an agent team that works well with the Cowboys. "oooh, I'm so angry, I'm going to hire agents that you like to work with...take that!"

I'd tell him to take a deal on par with Igor, sign his tender, or go find a trading partner.

Perhaps interest in trading for Spears will heat up now. It wasn't going to happen until he picked an agent. I'd be shocked if he gets a long term deal in Dallas. Only way I see that happening is if he wants to play for peanuts or if he plays on the 1 year contract and has 6+ sacks half way through the year. Dallas may decide to give him Canty money then.

I'd take a middle of the round second at this point and roll the dice with what you have at DE. Maybe try and squeeze a 6th or 7th rounder on top of that.

what it boils down to this year, Marcus Spears must have a monster year at DE if he wants a big contract, otherwise he wont get what he thinks he should get.

I think he'd like an Igor deal, but not sure Jerry would.

This has "try hard for one year in your career and then coast" written all over it. No matter what he does this year we should not pay him a lot. Look at his body of work = to a 4th rounder. Spears' first contract, we WAY over paid him because his results did not equal his draft position. Now he DESERVES to be underpaid so we get some of our money back from overpaying him in the first place. Parcells railed on him for being fat and out of shape (round is a shape), and he still looks the same - Chubby Checker/Fats Domino.

I think he is definately worth what Igor got unless you can get the same thing from Bowen, Hatcher, or a draft pick for less than half that.

Canty was so overpaid, if that is what Spears is thinking he is about to get his world rocked.

Why does Jerry take care of players he thinks have a future with Dallas? Because it is good busness.

Your original post stating the tender doesnt indicate whether Dallas likes Spears or not is strange at best?

If Dallas liked what Spears was doing they would have signed him long term, prior to the agreement. Your ramble is not even worth considering, since most understand Spears is overpaid and not valued.

Yeah, I just posted exactly what both Jerry and Spears said about the situation ... but that isn't worth considering.

By your logic here, Austin is not valued. He hasn't been signed long term either. Talk about a ramble not worth considering.

I'm with abersonc on this one. I don't see how you can make an assumption about how they feel about spears based off of the fact that they didn't arbitrarily tender him at an unnecessarily high level. In fact, if anything, this is just pressure for him to agree to a long term deal.

If they'd tendered him at the first round level or higher that would seem more equivalent to giving him a one year deal. This way they basically know that he's going to cave and sign a reasonable long term deal. Definitely, a sign of not wanting him:rolleyes:.

Spears will be here. Hatch nor Bowen bring the same results in the rush defense. He is good at what he is asked to do. Otherwise the front office could careless what happened to him. (see canty)
