Marcus Spears will not play in the preseason games, but the defensive end said he will be back for the Sept. 12 season opener at Washington.

Spears sprained his medial collateral ligament in his knee during the second-to-last practice inside the Alamodome, and he has not practiced since. The diagnosis was a 4-6 recovery time and Spears has stepped up his rehab work this week. For the morning practice, he worked on a blocking sled, pushing 250 pounds worth of weight, while also doing a lot of cardiovascular work.

"I'll be ready for Washington," Spears said. "I'll have close to two weeks of practice in before we play. I'll be ready but I know [Jason Hatcher] probably is going to take a lot of the workload in Washington. I've got to be ready to come in and be ready to go fast."

good to hear.

We are going to need him big time to do what the team wants to do this year.

He's a little better at stuffing the run but Hatcher is the better over all player. I think this is Spears last year here.

I repeat: Spears is not better at stopping the run than Hatcher!

lol, hatchers dad is back on board. Its not even close, sto embarassing yourself

Yeah I remember people saying he's expendable... NONE of the DE's stop the run like my boy Spears does. In the NFL, if you can't stop the run, you don't win.

He's not even close to being the run stopper that Igor is so I don't understand the statement.

People who act like Hatcher was the fault in the Charger's game are being dishonestly ignorant. Go watch the game and watch him take on double teams from the guard and tackle (mind you, this is totally different from a double team by the tacklet and TE) and not move more than a yard. There were a couple of plays that come to mind and they were stopped for 3 and 2 yards respectively.

Just watch the game and watch the player. If not, you're just being dishonestly ignorant like I said. But hollow **** resonates loud so people can carry on.

you're the ignorant one, if he was as good at stopping the run he'd have been in on first and second downs the last 3 years. He hasn't and he isn't.

oh i'm sorry, i was under the impression that spears gave way on 3rd downs/passing situations for a pass rushing de, such as hatcher, bowen etc.

Hatcher has been rotating whole series with Spears as well as playing most 3rd downs.

Hatcher has been playing 1st and 2nd downs about a third of the game and this increased as the season went on last year.

if thats the case my bad Newnation

Very good news, so it looks like the only stater missing against Washington will be Kosier.

Good, his run defense qualities have gone unmatched during his absence.
