DMN Blog: Martellus Bennett struggling with mental adjustment

Is his potential worth losing Fasano's contribution?(even if it was meagre at best)-because it looks like he will be behind Curtis on the depth chart.I just hope he blocks well so he can come in some plays(we play 2 TEs 40% of the time right?)

Like speedkilz88 mentioned... Fasano also would have been behind Curtis this year. Curtis is no slouch and will be at least as good as Fasano (IMO) until Bennett is ready to go. That may or may not be this season... but I expect Bennett to get at least a few snaps per game.

:laugh2:

Yeah, that's who I was talking about. Actually, it wasn't a WR... it was their TE, Davis, from USC, who they took in round 2.

Disagree.

I expect that regardless of his problems grasping the playbook the team will look to involve him by making certain plays "his" - that way he can concentrate on certain plays while gaining the experience in the offense that gives him a better understanding of the rest of the playbook

Goalline anyone?

He should at least be a solid decoy down by the end zone because of his athleticism. If he gets in an early TD this season defenses will have to look for him from then on.

He could probably do well but I see Barber doing all the goal line work. Bennett will probably be a spot player for this year. I don't see him make a huge contribution because of the guys ahead of him. No doubt he will help but I don't think hes going to have any set role come week 1.

Just compare him to A. Gates....which I know is a stretch, but he's certainly a poor man's version.

Didn't it take Gates awhile to pick up the game?

IMO, once Bennett picks it up...watch out. This guy could be a beast...which is MUCH more than you could ever say about Fasano.

Well the coaches admit they made a mistake with Carpenter. Who is to say that what happened last year (and all we have is rumors) that Fasano was having real problems. Lets face it: on this team NO OTHER TE is going to do much as long as Witten is playing.

You are right that no tight end will do much as far as numbers as long as Witten is playing. Still you would expect more from your second tight end than 28 receptions, 269 yards, 9.6 yards per reception and 1 TD over two seasons. And also 1 reception, 5 yards over two playoff games. The second tight end should be getting close to those numbers for a single season.

Fasano was supposed to be NFL ready since he played for Charlie Weiss. That was also an offense that was similar to the one that Dallas has run the last two years.

I think part of the feeling that Dallas traded Fasano is that he proved to be a JAG. They see that the offense did well with a JAG as the second tight end. They can do that again this year with a JAG in Tony Curtis. Their goal was not to get Bennett, he just kind of landed in their laps in the 2nd round.

I don't think Curtis will be better than Fasano. I hope he is, but I don't expect it. He is a JAG, so it really should not be diferent than Fasano being on the team.

I do expect Bennett to be better than Fasano. It just may not be this year. He will need a year to develop his game since he did not come from a pro-style offense in college.

But the amount of attention that Witten is going to get when we get in the redzone, particularly inside the 10 or 5, is going to allow Curtis and Bennet to see 1-on-1 coverage most likely. With their size and athleticism they will be as much of a threat to score as Witten will IMO.

Very nice.

I think that is right on the :money:

Actually it's way off the money considering Gates was barely used his first year (being undrafted and a former basketball player, and all) until late and exploded his second year when he finally got his chance. It didn't takes Gates long at all. He was pretty much dominant as soon as the Chargers decided to throw him the ball. Bennett will never be featured here as long as Witten is around.

If Bennett can put up numbers comparable to what Gates did his first year, even without the hype and being undrafted, I think his season would have been a success.

What I was saying, was in terms of learning the playbook and little things that go along with playing TE in the NFL. Gates was able to learn this his first year.

If Curtis is starting in front of Bennett this year, then that means he will be barely be used his first year (Gates). A year of learning. Then, his second year, he moves ahead of Curtis and becomes a threat to defenses.

Just because Witten is the starting TE, doesn't mean that they don't line Bennett up at other places besides the traditional TE postion. The potential is there for him...all he has to do is put it together. And if that happens...watch out. This was not an option with Fasano. What you saw if what you get.

How you can't see the comparison to Gates is beyond me. Both are non traditional TE's, with freakish athletic ability. Both palyed basketball in college. Both had limited knowledge of an NFL playbook during their first year - one due to playing only basketball and the other due to Fran's system.

I have been very consistent in my unwillingness to compare rookies to stars. I KNOW what Gates is, I've got no clue what Bennett is other than what people keep saying.

I won't compare Felix to Reggie Bush, who has obvious weaknesses, so why on earth would I compare Bennett to Gates?

Whew.

Good thing we are good at developing TEs that struggle with the mental aspect.

Go study your playbook and work on your game and come to camp ready and willing to learn...

...and still being 6-6 260 and athletic when the season starts won't hurt either
