Rookie free agent Danny McCray has made a big impression on special teams. Mention his name around Joe DeCamillis and the excitement in the voice of the Cowboys special teams coach is evident.

The coaches aren't the only ones to notice the effort put forth by the LSU safety. Fourth round pick Akwasi Owusu-Ansah spoke of McCray after the team's win over San Diego.

"Danny McCray, our gunner, he was pushing it,'' Owusu-Ansah said. "He was tired and giving that little bit extra. That's something that stood out to me. That's something I've got to apply to myself if I want to be exceptional.

Safety Barry Church made his statement for a roster spot when Gerald Sensabaugh was forced to leave the San Diego game in the first quarter with a shoulder injury.

The rookie free agent tied DeMarcus Ware for second on the team in tackles with five (unofficial total), broke up a pass and returned a fumble 80 yards to set up the Cowboys first offensive touchdown of the preseason.

Since Sensabaugh will miss the remainder of the preseason, Church will be given the chance to build on his performance.

"I felt pretty confident out there,'' Church said. "The plays came pretty smoothly to me. I got the calls in smoothly. Overall, I think I played pretty good.

This is a tough call for sure...

There's no way I see both McCray and Church making the final roster, but who do we keep?

Church has more potential as a Safety, but McCray is better on Special Teams...so much so, that he is one of the best players we have.

It may make sense to keep Church because of being better at his position, but don't forget that the main resposnibility of the backups is to excel on Special Teams, and McCray has a big edge there.

I think Church gets the nod as the fifth safety when it's all said and done (assuming we keep both AOA and M. Hamlin), but it really could go either way.

Me neither. I gotta tell ya, Teddy Williams has no shot, and I flat out like him. But no way we carry that many CBs.

I want a 60 man all active roster. Offer it to the players union and sign the CBA so no strike.

Gotta love all 3 guys mentioned.

Akwasi showed a lot by noticing and striving for the strength in McCray to battle through the grind of the game and still push it to a high level.

McCray showed a ton by doing it.

Church showed a lot by not getting caught up in all of the learning going on, and being able to step up and just make plays.

I like all 3.

I agree, I like your idea. I never liked the idea of a 53 man roster, especially with 45 active on gameday. It just sucks that there is going to be some really good players getting cut by us, and unfortunatley will get picked up by some other teams. I also never liked the idea of practice squad players being unprotected either.

I think if you went back to the 1970s you could find a few.

Drew Pearson and Cliff Harris were both undrafted FAs.

Tough roster to make...I really like McCann, McCray, Church but they're all in indirect competition with one another

I also never liked the idea of practice squad players being unprotected either.

On this idea, I like it the way it is. Practice squad players make a fraction of what those on the 53 do. They should have an opportunity to sign on to a 53 man roster, regardless of whose team it is. Unless, the practice squad guys start drawing league minumum for the 53 man roster, they should be able to enter the market wherever they can.

The recovery and run back was a sexy play, and I give him all the credit in the world for scooping the ball up and making a play - however his lack of speed as very obvious and the fact that we ran out of steam at the 15 yard line was kinda pathetic given that he's a DB.

No way he should get tackled in the open field by a QB. And he wouldn't have if he hadn't looked like Albert Haynesworth those last 5 yards.

he didnt run out of steam, he looked like he was going to just cut back inside, if he stayed outside he had an easy td.
